Selda Imperium

The Selda Imperium is a constitutional monarchy, with a figurehead Emperor and a powerful parliamentary system. Due to the legacy of the Empire it has only a razor thin human majority, at 52% of the population. The remanding demographics are 27% moogles, 11% Djinnae, 10% Mitare.

The Selda Imperium is somewhat famous for it's chocobo ranches, indeed the flag of the reformed Imperium, features a chocobo, furthering the stereotype of Seldans as obsessed with cuteness, partly due to the prominent moogle population. One should not mistake the liberal nature of the Empire for a lack of strength, it retains a strong military along with a slightly unusual all female Aspect Corps.

Selda's are stereotypically characterised as reserved hardworking people, who collapse into a frenzy of adoration the moment they spot something 'cute'.

Zhrina Corporate Republic

The Zhrina Corporate Republic is a robust military power, run by a board of powerful director's it's entirely privatised national economy goes from strength to strength on the basis of it's ruthless technological progress in the field of power generation and military products. It also has the world's only space elevator, linked to a series of micro-gravity production facilities, research stations and the famous Golden Saucer Zee-Gee Entertainment Park.

Hesperides Principality

Hesperides is a Principality ruled by Three Princess's selected from amongst the most prominent Noble Families and for most of it's recent history, at least one of them is rumoured to of been an Aspect. Significant natural resources are abound within it's borders, including heavy metals and a fair share of Crystallium deposits.

Hesperides has traditionally been a peaceful nation, who's denizens seem untroubled by the lack of human rights in comparison to other nations. In the past decade however it been plagued by a militant pro-democracy movement, determined to tear down the Monarchy which in recent years, has suffered a series of public scandals relating to corruption within the upper reaches of Government.

The Hesperii Federal Union

The democratic neighbours of Hesperides joined together after the Grandee War in order to strengthen themselves against a large number of autocratic neighbours. Perceived as rather meddling, the Hesperii are universally market socialists with a strong human rights charter and have a somewhat cold relationship with Hesperides, seeing it's Monarchy as an embarrassing anachronism at best.

Their foreign policy is characterised by a reliance on economic and diplomatic pressure to exert positive outcomes for their national interests. It's military has a large reserve forces, allowing it to maintain a relatively small military, but one described as a sleeping giant by it's neighbours.

Jucheon

Jucheon is a eastern state, which significant energy resources. It's autocratic government is mired in allegations of corruption, which have stung other nations through energy ties. Outlandish rumours of organised crime with access to high level military equipment are amongst the most damaging to it's international image. Despite this, many parts of the world are still reliant on the resources Jucheon can provide, with civilian crystallium tech being the preserve of elite nations despite international treaties.

South Thrusia

South Thrusia is a democratic state with strong ties to the Seldan Imperium. The Allied Powers League maintains multiple bases on it's territory, watching the border with North Thrusia, a Zhrina client state. South Thrusia is also a constitutional monarchy, keeping in with the general belief in the United Treaty Organisation of strong historical figures. The Seldans restored King of Thrusia, Frederick the Third to his throne, as a figurehead.

The South Thrusian military is relatively strong and recently regained it's Aspect Corps.

North Thrusia

North Thrusia remains in the grip of the Global Trade Alliance, controlled by powerful corporate interests in Zhrina, North Thrusia is a virtual sweatshop and testing ground for high tech products.

Sacred Empire of Eidolas

The Sacred Empire is made up of a number of disenfranchised nations who have embraced a cult/religion that worships the Aspects as divine messengers or demi-gods. While each is ruled by it's own government system, they are all bound by a theocratic entity which has ultimate oversight. Curiously, the Aspects of the Sacred Empire are not the rulers themselves, but are typically raised devotee's of the religion 'ascended' to their status by one of the Nine Prophets, who act as Heads of the Church. While many regard the nation as sinister, the Church of Eidolas has contributed significantly to the cohesion and prosperity of the average citizens of the Sacred Empire.

Armstron

Unable to afford the mighty arcologies of it's neighbours, Armstrons populace have a hard frontier attitude. Everyone in this nation has the right and some feel obligation to own military grade weapons. The Government of the Armstrong Union itself provides subsidies for arms purchases to ensure that citizens in the farflung mining towns of the frontier are well protected.

Sainthaven

One of the quieter nations on Jecht, Sainthaven would a sleepy polity on the edge of the continent if not for it's proximity to Gestalh. Politically neutral and ruled by a Democratic council of scientists, Sainthaven is a staging ground for most international activity on Jecht and Gestalh.

Laenus

Laenus is a strongly democratic state suffering from an internal squabble relating to supporters of the recently deposed King of the former Kingdom. This instability has spread to it's neighbours and is a concern for the usually extremely stable region of west Kefka.

Fairweather

Weary of it's neighbours, Fairweather is a paranoid police state who's security forces are constantly on the prowl for internal dissent and foreign spies. Nicknamed Fairwarning by it's neighbours, outsiders are not welcome to this robustly vigilant country.

Albereich

The Proud nation of Albereich is ruled by the General-Duke of Albe, the Capital City of this militant and stoic nation. Once a strong supporter of the Crystal Compact, defeat in the war saw it almost ruined by civil war until a suitable scapegoat was discovered and the moogle population relocated to Selda. While most would rather see this mockery of a Monarchy overthrown, Selda is unable to act for fear of exposing a flank of the blight zone. In recent years, it has grown tired of the constant tirades against moogles and neither Selda or Zhrina have much of an investment in this troublespot.

SunSphere Unity

Sunsphere is probably one of the most pleasant countries on Jecht. It's coastal waters are warm and lined with tropical beaches, while the interior is cool savannah filled with docile wildlife and quiet cities. The Arcologies of Sunphere float above the untouched landscape, interrupted only by Mining Towers that reach deep into the Earth to extract the vast Crystallium riches that power the SunSphere economy.

SunSpherians are seen as slightly obnoxious to outsiders, they have a aloof liberal attitude that looks down on others, especially the overtly religious.

Every country has a darker side and Sunsphere's is perhaps an official citizenry that is completely human. Sunsphere does not have an immigration policy, additional labour needs are met using a automated workforce. There is no official discrimination against visiting non-humans but attempts at illegal immigration are met with a swift response and foreign aliens are treated with suspicion.

Josei City States

Josei is a set of small city-states that share relatively little other than geography, being named after the Josei Bay. They have always been mostly known for fishing, mining, and other resource extraction, generally staying out of politics and growing rich. After a failed coup occurred, central authority vanished, and the cities of North Point, Karamba, and Zambria City emerged as competitors. Even the mountaintop villages are largely independent. While there is no strife currently, no power has the force to seize control.

Background History for the Unstable States Region

During most of the 18th, 19th and early 20th century, there were several Great Powers, the Seldan Imperium, the Grand Heptarchy and Imperial Zhogunkai. Of these, the Grand Heptarchy has fallen furthest. Once a powerful colletion of Seven states under an Imperial leader, the Archon, it collapsed finally in the late 20th century, spawning decades of civil wars, ethnic conflict and succession battles. Practically none of the successor states are agreed over territory, with various maps and imperial records in direct conflict as well of years of inter-marriage and imperial resettlement programmes providing a backdrop for extreme ethnic tensions.

The Second Grand Heptarchy

The Second Grand Heptarchy was once seen as perhaps the end of the reign of inability in the former Heptarchy areas, but the rise of the 2nd Grand Heptarchy has only contributed to the unstable politics of the area. Born from the former core state of the Heptarchy and it's capital, the formation of the Second Grand Heptarchy immediately stalled as it's armies advanced into the Free Republic of Edea, who resisted fiercly and after years of bloody fighting, drove out the Heptarchy forces. An uneasy peace remains, with frequent tit for tat incidents of terrorism. Despite it's name and the 'prestige' of the former Imperial Capital, The Second Grand Heptarchy is a dying state, years of internal turmoil and simmering republican terrorist and rebel movements have contributed to a long stagnation of it's economy, despite it's Crystallium reserves.

The main plague of the Second Grand Heptarchy is the 'Squall Republic Liberation Front', who aim to re-establish the pre-imperial state of Squall.

The Free Republic of Edea

The Free Republic was one of the insigators of the collapse of the Heptarchy, while other forces fought for various pretenders to the throne, forces native to Edea outright rebelled against the Heptarchy as a whole and declared the Republic of Edea, free from Imperial rule. One of the core manufacturing areas of the former Empire, Edea had access to considerable industrial might which almost saw them extend the 'liberation' of republicanism across the Heptarchy, if not for the vicious assaults by other warring states which ruined much of the countries infrastructure. Today the Free Republic is a wounded animal, reeling from tension with the Second Grand Heptarchy and internal conflicts.

The Kingdom of Rinoan

The Kingdom of Rinoan suffers from an extreme ethnic divide, with two very different cultures merged by the Imperial programme of re-location. Intended to balance out the spread of population, in it's wake it has left a bitter struggle over land, resources and identity. The Kingdom of Rinoan is divided between native Rinoans and Squallian settlers from the crowded territories of the Imperial capital. Some 39% of the population is Squallian, and the rest are near uniformally Rinoan in descent. The Squall Republic Liberation Front operates in Rinoan as well, with several bases scattered across it's hinterlands, a source of much unwelcome attention from various neighbours.

The Adel Annex

A controversial State, the Adel Annex is ruled by a cadre of former Heptarchy Aspects, who seized control of this small but productive province of the former Imperial state. Secretive and elusive, control is maintained through a system of secret police and is it one of the more ruthless successor states. It is plagued by Laguna's Legion, a terrorist/militant/resistance organisation, dedicated to their overthrow with the support of Laguna, a former Imperial Aspect himself.

The Ellone Republic

A troubled state bordering Bernicia, Ellone is the home base of Laguna's Legion and has no proper central authority, divided between a weak Government and various sub-national organisations. Despite it's mineral wealth, it's continuing instability and lawlessness has seen it descend into poverty, most of the population are reliant on dubious militant organisations operating throughout the unstable states, who use this lawless land as a convinent recruitment base. This is helped by the ethnic diversity of the country, it was a formerly difficult land with no real native population, colonised by the rest of the Heptarchy, as such it has people from all across the former imperial state.
