Bernicia is a country located on the coast of the middle sea in central Kefka, and one of the successor states that has arisen out of the disintegration of the now defunct Grand Heptarchy. Like the rest of the so called “Unstable” states it has been deeply wounded by the unrest and open warfare that has followed in the wake of the Heptarchy's collapse in the late 1980s. Even the last decade of relative peace has failed to remove all the signs of conflict from the uneasy new border regions and every edict issued by the ruling military council is another reminder to the population that the present peace is simply an illusion.

The Bernician cities were amongst the most vibrant of the middle sea's ancient communities and they continued to thrive even after their fall to the rising power of the Heptarchy in the late middle ages. As the cultural and mercantile center of that sprawling domain they continued to prosper even through its long and steady decline, escaping even from the chaos of the 1940s without much incident. But with the death of the last Archon in 1983, war at last came to Bernicia as Heptarchy Imperial forces turned on each other in support of pretenders to the throne and rebellious national groups and tore the Seven Countries down into rubble.

As the conflict progressed and it rapidly became apparent that no single party had the power to end the civil war in possession of the now sundered whole, various parties began to rush to consolidate power where they could. An unlikely alliance of the Heptarchy's 2nd Army and certain fleet elements solidified their hold over the Bernician region and in 1989 declared the resurrection of that ancient country as an independent state. Although Bernicia has so far largely remained on the sidelines of renewed fighting in the Unstable States, it seems unlikely that it will be able to, or even desire to remain neutral forever.


Geography

The Coastal Plains

The heartland of Bernicia is its coastal provinces, centered around the remaining ancient city-states that have survived and perhaps even prospered in these dark days. Most of the country's population and economic activity is crammed into these urban centers, with pre-war populations now inflated by the tide of refugees arriving from various battle fronts.

The Highlands

To the north of the rolling countryside of the coast rise the Blue Mountains, the rocky bulwark that has shielded the coastal cities from the worst of the wars to the north. The two main passes were once busy trade routes with crowded highways and railways but now the roads north are mostly quiet, watched over from heights dominated by fortifications.

Great Central Banks

For many centuries the Great Central Banks were renowned as one of the most productive fishing areas in the middle sea, and in recent years Bernicia has moved to better control and exploit its offshore wealth. Fishing ships have been joined by huge drilling platforms, and by the boxy warships of the Armada.
