XP Based Chargen: Exalted

Experience Point based chargen, assuming the most efficient XP distributions. Characters won't get any weaker, just non-minmaxed characters will be stronger.

General Rules

Leftover XP may be folded into XP in the same category to buy something (so leftover Primary Attribute XP may be folded into Secondary or Tertiary attributes, for example). If you still can't buy anything with the remainder fold it into 'general/freebie point' XP.

Attributes

Characters start with 1 dot in each attribute for free, as normal.

Quick Reference: Attribute Costs

For Favoreds, Lunars and Alchemicals pay (Current * 3) XP instead. These two splats may also accord an extra 24 XP to any single category of their choosing to represent bonus dots.

  • 1 dot: 0 XP
  • 2 dots: 0 + 4 = 4 XP (3 XP Favored)
  • 3 dots: 4 + 8 = 12 XP (9 XP Favored)
  • 4 dots: 12 + 12 = 24 XP (18 XP Favored)
  • 5 dots: 24 + 16 = 40 XP (30 XP Favored)

Primary

Most efficient distribution: 5/5/1

Characters thus have 80 XP for primary attributes.

Least efficient distribution: 4/4/3 (60 XP, 20 XP penalty)

Secondary

Most efficient distribution: 5/3/1

Characters thus have 52 XP for secondary attributes.

Least efficient distribution: 3/3/3 (36 XP, 16 XP penalty)

Tertiary

Most efficient distribution: 5/1/1

Characters have 40 XP for tertiary attributes

Least efficient distribution: 3/2/2 (18 XP, 22 XP penalty)

Abilities

Reference

Solars, Abyssals, Infernals and other splats with Favored abilities pay (Current x2 -1) XP instead.

1: 3 XP
2: 5 XP (4 XP Favored)
3: 9 XP (7 XP Favored)
4: 15 XP (12 XP Favored)
5: 23 XP (19 XP Favored)

Additionally, all characters begin with 4 dots of specialties (6 for Realm and Looskhyan DBs). Additional points may be drawn from ability XP at a cost of 3 per dot of specialty, while specialties for favored abilities (and attributes) cost 2 XP each instead.

Costs

The most efficient distribution is taking 5 Favored (or otherwise essential, such as Integrity/Dodge) abilities at 5, and 3 ancillary abilities (Lore/Linguistics) at 1.

Characters start with 114 XP to spend on abilities. At least 40 XP must be spent on Favored attributes. If a splat lists base attribute requirements for a character, these must also be taken.

Least efficient distribution: as many abilities at 2 as possible (6, 4, 2) and remainder at 1: 70 XP (44 XP penalty).

Willpower and Virtues

Willpower

Starts at 5.

Virtues

All Virtues use the same costing as abilities. The most efficient distribution is 1-2 maxed virtues and the rest at 1 (depending on Exalt type).

Characters start with 28 XP to spend on Virtues, but you MUST buy at least 1 dot in each Virtue. You are not an automaton. No, not even you, Alchemical.

Essence and Charms

Essence

Essence starts at 2.

Charms

Most efficient: 10 non-favored charms.

Characters start with 100 XP of charms or knacks. For the sake of sanity, use Solar XP charts and count Knacks as non-favored charms. Splats that begin with more charms get 10 XP per, assuming that the player would spend them all in non-favored charms.

Least efficient: 10 favored charms (80 XP, 20 XP penalty.)

Backgrounds

21 XP. Backgrounds cost 3 XP/dot or point. Splats that get discounts or free background dots do not pay for these.

Bonus Points

The most efficient expenditure is raising Willpower to 10 (70 XP) and using remaining BP to max out all Virtues at 5 (87 XP).

160 XP to round off and fill in weaknesses. It is already assumed that the main expenditure is going to be attribute dots and Willpower to 10, although these are not especially important in XP based chargen.

The least efficient is prolly something silly like buying up Essence 4 (40 XP) with BP and then getting 2 dots of backgrounds (6 XP).
