Story

V'Neef Kaon

On the day of the birth of the twins V'Neef Kaon and V'Neef Kexet, the third day of Calibration, a Sideral monk gave an astrological prophecy; one was destined to exalt late and be the greatest Dragon-blood of House V'Neef, the other was destined to be crippled and never exalt. Even at a young age V'Neef Kaon, the eldest of the twins was always the more active one and was clearly to be the one who exalted. Trained in all the arts of war and governance, she was destined for greatness. Kexet, the younger, was trained instead for more domestic and social things - crippled may be her destiny, but she still had strong blood flowing through her veins. Of course the heads of House V'Neef weren't so boorish as to tell either of them of their astrological destiny.
Despite the differences in schooling the twins were inseperable, always somehow managing to elude their tutors. It was in of these outings on their 18th birthday after dodging their relatives and servants that in the ornamental gardens a bolt of lighting struck one of the ancient oaks. Without thinking, Kexet pushed her sister out of the path of the crashing bole. With her sister trapped under the immense trunk, Kaon instantly erupted - literally.
And thus Fate was satisfied . . . save for the fickle nature of Luna. Were it any other time it would simply have been the inexorable machinations of the Loom of Fate. But on this day Luna looked down and saw a kindred spirit and blew one of her shards of exaltation down. And thus not one but both of the twins exalted.
Few know exactly what happened that day, and to most it seemed that Calibration had shook fate to avoid a tragedy. Unfortunately to those same members of the family Kexet's inability to exalt as a Dragonblood was an even greater tragedy. On her 21st birthday at the urging of the same Sidereal who read her stars two decades ago she departed for the Threshold, a mortal of the V'Neef family spending time at the House's outlying satrapies before returning home to marry as directed.
Kexet, of course, has other ideas. As does Luna.
