Overview and History

Ulsland is a kingdom build, quite literally, on a much older foundation. The Pliunis cat-folk who dwell there pass down legends that the great, black castles greeted those fleeing Alfar subjugation. Part fortresses and part cathedrals, these became key strongholds for the Pliunis. Though they eventually conceded annexation due to fatigue and wavering supplies, the ancient structures had become ingrained into their society. Those clans which claimed the castles gained great power and prestige, and rebuilt them as their seats of power.

Ulsland is based around three different castles, spread across the savanna north of Lanreath. Castle Ulsland sits in the west amidst the nation’s major city, and serves as the royal family’s home. The current King, Ignil II, holds power with the support of dozens of noble families, including the mystically-disciplined Paladins. Traditionally, the Duke of Ulsland serves under him as seneschal to the city and the lands, and thus holds considerable sway over the kingdom’s policies. To the east, Castle Ilswis cits in amid several hills, ruled by the Duke of Ilswis. Though not as powerful as Ulsland, the discovery of a new gold mine has given birth to a bustling boom-town within Ilswis’ governance, and has given the Duke considerable influence in the Royal Court.

Finally, the castle, situated in the northern regions near the mountains, is a special case. Unlike the other two, this structure stands unoccupied – at least, by any Pliunis residents. Dubbed Castle Larna, the structure rises above tangled brush teeming with giant boars, its dark walls showing unnatural resilience despite their age. Attempts to settle there were met with harsh conditions, mostly from the native Ogre-drakes and the various boars, wyverns, and giant-mawed Bulettes. During the Necromantic War, an agreement was brokered between the Ogre-drakes and the Ulslanders, and the former serve as weapons of war. The only traces of civilization remain the massive stockades, where the local wildlife is bred to fight in the Ulslander war machine.

The strange castles have taken on a religious significance to the Soreism-practicing Uslanders, who honour the spirits of their creators as if they were own people. This worship has waxed in recent years, with several cults reported to be led by the ghosts of the mysterious creators. These have not been substantiated and are scoffed at by most local scholars as folk superstition.

Though they were within close proximity to their cousins in Lanreath, Ulsland declined to join with the League during the Necromantic War. They instead formed their own defense, bolstered by armoured Bulettes laden with archers, and armies of knights mounted upon savage dire-boars and high-flying wyverns. They have remained independent to this day, embroiled in their own internal politicking, particularly that between the two Dukes.
