Introduction

Early History:

The Marshall Republic is a Second Stage colony on the planet Prosperity spearheaded by the Greater Republic of Singapore in the mid 21st century. It is named after Singapore's first chief minister, David Saul Marshall. Like its parent, the Marshall Republic is governed by a democratically elected autocracy, with meritocracy and pragmatism as its watchwords. It has a well developed economy and industry, and is known for its cosmopolitan society.

The First Space War:

Talk to any Marshallian who was around during the War and you will get tales of the first heady days when American Supercarriers were taking on supplies from Star Fort Canning, to the sheltering of refugee civilian ZOCU ships from American pursuit, to the HEC ultimatum and the return of the supercarriers. Public opinion is divided between “ooh, cool warships”, “don't care” and “does this mean we get more money?”

Present State:

Thanks to the relatively conservative society on Prosperity, the exodus of the post-humans did not have as crippling an effect on the Marshall Republic. On the other hand, with Prosperity's distance from the Core, its cosmopolitan nature prevented the marginalization of augmented humans, resulting in a significant number who did not wish to leave for the Expanse to settle on Prosperity. This has, from time to time, strained relations with the Pac-Am, but the Republic's relatively subservient nature has smoothed over any significant problems.

Astrography:

Description: Kibi is a class K main sequence star like Alpha Centauri b or Epsilon Eridani, and is cooler than Sol. At the same time, Prosperity orbits at around the same distance as Earth, thus it enjoys a cool, temperate climate for most of the planet, with larger ice caps.

Prosperity consists of 3 main continents, separated by 4 large oceans. Most of the population live on the two more seismically stable, less mountainous continents. All three are fully terraformed and boast a wide range of earth descended flora and fauna.

Economy

(Correct as of January 2195)

Overview: The Marshall Republic has a highly developed and successful free-market economy. It enjoys a remarkably open and corruption-free environment and stable prices. Fiscal stimulus, low interest rates, a surge in exports, and internal flexibility led to vigorous growth in recent years despite the instability sweeping the human Sphere.

Wealth: 671 (467 + 204) Industry: 550 Population: 408 Housing: 420

HEC Helium Supply: 1625

Domestic Strategic Resource Production: None

Traits

Positive: HEC Connections (Auto) As a nation that retains its Second Stage status, Marshall maintains good ties with the Core and HEC, giving it a high flow of He3. As it has no active terraforming commitments, nor does it have a space navy, the majority of Marshall's monthly allotment goes straight into the massive strategic helium reserves.

Medium Shipyards: 10 Heavy Shipyards: 10

The Keppel and Jurong Orbital Shipyards are both government owned commercial ventures that primarily build merchant ships, space station modules and custom order civilian ships. Both reserve yard space for government-ordered military construction if required, although the last military vessel built was a very long time ago.

Affable: 15

Marshall's diplomatic corps are made up of experienced negotiators who know the importance of not stepping on toes. Marshall generally has a live and let live policy, and will usually give humanitarian aid in the form of either money or helium when ask for, so long as the amount isn't ridiculous. At the same time, ships and people from all nations are welcome to Prosperity, so long as they behave themselves and pay their docking charges.

Crossing The Line: 5

Marshall has in recent years pursued closer ties with its ZOCU neighbours, mainly interested in economic cooperation and expansion. Its Coreward ties have been a severe hindrance in this regard however, leading to great distrust on the ZOCU side initially. Now there has been some level of rapprochement, which has also led to an unfortunate level of suspicion on the Pac-Am side.

Negative: Access To Information: 10

Like Singapore, Marshall strives for a corruption free government and achieves this through transparency. The citizen is permitted to access any information on the government except certain information, like that of the intelligence services, that could compromise the safety of individuals.

Resourceless: 10

Also like Singapore, Marshall was chosen for its location, not its resources. As such, while there is sufficient raw materials for industrial production, there is a lack of strategic resources, leaving Marshall to either import or work around such needs.

Military

Overview: The Marshall Republic Defence Force (MRDF) is a modern service that enjoys a good standing in the eyes of the citizens. It is the ultimate expression of Marshall's noninterference policy in that it does not have a single unit that is capable of offensive actions. At the same time, it suffers from the significant weakness that is the lack of heavy ground forces or mobile space units. With the continuously deteriorating interstellar situation, the Government is now attempting to improve the MRDF's capabilities.
