History
Humanity was a multinational interstellar species with colonies throughout the solar system and one in Proxima Centuri. The New Republic of China, the European Union, Allied States of Africa, The Pacific Treaty States were in the midst of a golden age of democracy and human expansion, billions of citizens across the world were finally free of corporate yoke as the major powers of the world instituted controls over the financial instituions that had almost ruined the planet during the 21st century.
In the year 2230, this all changed. Humanity was caught in the crossfire of a interstellar war between several alien species. A Fleet of Alien warships miscalculated a FTL jump and entered the Sol System, several emerged inside the atmosphere of the Earth, crash landing, the atmospheric disturbances caused extensive damage to the biosphere of the planet, one ship impacted at substantial speed, vaporising much of South America, another wiped out the middle east, whilst others managed to land, beginning fierce ground battles as Earth mistook their arrival for an attack.
Over the next decade, humanity fought bitterly as the planet began to die. The colonies could only watch as the ash and exotic radiation of the crash-sites gripped the earth in a cancerous embrace. As the last alien forces were pacified, the golden age ended in strife, as humanities political institutions crumbled and the rule of law evaporated.
Earth Orbital One stepped in to fill the void. It was the largest space station in human history, 35 million people called the two tandem O'Neill Cylinder home. A Joint Project between the European Union and the New Republic of China, it was the headquarters of the United Nations Interstellar Security Service, responsible for policing space to ensure space was not militarized. Ironically, they were the only forces to carry weapons and often found themselves acting against private entities were bent the space treaties in attempts to profiteer and coerce and the occasional rogue state.
It's first duties were to secure the crash-sites, under the purvey that all spaceships capable of interstellar travel were subject to their purview, they seized the crash-sites. In efforts to secure them, they acted against the wishes of remnant governments, over the decade they found they had to increasingly use force against 'rogue' governments in orbital to secure the crash-sites and ensure order.
General overview
The United National Nominate is the governing body of humanity, it's capital is Earth One Orbital and it holds domain over several dozen human colonies. It is an unusual authoritarian regime with technical freedoms. Founded in the most trying of times, the legislative branch of it's government is inferior to the Judicial Branch of the Government and the lawful constitution of the UNN. The Supreme Court has final ruling all on legislation passed by the freely elected representatives.
Citizens of the UNN are in general content and happy with the quality of living under the regime, it's justice is firm but fair and it's punishments generally measured. It's socetial weakness is found in the pervasiveness of the judicial system into people's lives. As the makeup of the Supreme Court changes, so has the degree of freedoms enjoyed by the populace, nomatter how hard a organization fights against corruption, it never cases to be a ongoing challenge in a stable society. The Panoply are responsible for enforcing Justice both within the system and without and the power plays between them and the Government's vested interests are the main causes of internal discord.
Despite the threat of corruption, for over a century the system has held and preserved the majority of people's freedoms and ensured that in the aftermath of tradegy, a stable future for humanity exists.
Military
The Military of the UNN is a vast outgrowth of the UNISS, Military force was increasingly used to pacify Earth and the outer colonies and bring them under the rule of the UNN. The military still consumes a fair portion of the national budget and finds itself in a grey area, as a formal military force and responsible for paramilitary activities against heavily armed domestic threats.
The straight up military fighting force of the UNN, they comprise heavily armed warships who are meant to defend against any Xeno threat. They compromise an integrated Marine force who specialise in counter-xeno operations. Should the enemies of humanity return, it is the UNNN who will bear the brunt of the fighting.
United Nominate Security Service
A paramilitary force, they are responsible for operations against internal domestic terror threats, armed groups and criminals. Not as highly equipped as the UNN, they are nevertheless responsible for paramilitary law enforcement and Internal Security.
