Neo-Feudalism places a stratified order upon society, in which positions, titles and privileges are earned or lost. Of particular note is a human who pledges themselves to a vampire in order to be sired. Traditionally, one is sired to a high ranking member of a recognised 'House' and becomes a low ranking member of that household. This web of obligations is what ties members of a house together, ties houses together into blocs and ultimately the nation together as most House leaders owe the Emperor significant loyalty and patronage.

The room was dimly lit, he walked along a narrow stone tunnel lit by candles in small carved alcoves either side of him. Up ahead it opened out into a circular room, lit by a chandellier of black metal. Beneath it was a marble alter, upon which several silver cups were placed, along with a ceremonial blade. Around the room metallic statues stood watchful, great swords pressed tightly to the delicately carved faces.

“Quintus” a voice spoke from behind the altar. An immortal stood there, is a black leather doublet with a purple half cape drapped over one shoulder.

He knelt before his Lord, clasping his hands in a fist above him “My Lord”

From the corner of his vision, he noticed other dark figures waiting in the shadows, observing.

“Quintus Valerius, in recognition of your service and of the potency of your blood, we find you worthy of being lifted up and made in our immortal image. You are here to swear a oath of eternal service to the Empire and to your Lord. A oath sworn in blood.” She took the knife in her pale hand and held it up.

“With this blade of silver, we shall commit to a contract, of Lord and vassal, of Sire and Sired that will last until the final death”

She cut cleanly across her wrist, spilling precious thick blood into the ornated goblet.

“Quintus, do you accept the gift of immortality, do you swear featly to the Empire, to your Lord, to the Clan Constans and to the immortal bloodline?”

“I do”

“Do you accept the price of balance, to consume the crimson wellspring of life, to fuel your eternal existance?”

“I do”

“Then take this cup and drink deep”

Quintus rose and took the offered cup, drinking deeply the rich blood. He felt disorientated suddenly and two immortals grabbed him as he fell back, lowering him gently into a coffin filled with earth. They took his hands and slit his wrists, pouring his blood into vases.

“Be reborn in the soil of our world Quintus and rejoin us from death”

He died within minutes, the mortal blood flowing freely from the wounds and with the passing of his mortal body, the vampiric blood awoke to it's purpose, infiltrating and conquering the dead flesh and giving it new purpose. Sealed within the ancient oak coffin and watched over by the Clans ??? an immortal was being birthed, onto a journey that he hoped would last until the last stars burned out.
