Concept: Black Army, Red Mage

Rufinus Phocas is an officer in the Black Army, just one of the many southern aristocrats who have entered into the service of the Black King. Formerly simply the bookish second son of an old noble family looking to spend a lifetime on scholarly pursuits, he was catapulted into a military career after his home city of Irenopolis aligned itself with the Black King's growing realm and his family began looking for ways to integrate itself into the new regime. Over the course of a dozen campaigns he's gotten used to the hardships of army life and found that working for the Black King offers opportunities for learning undreamed of even in the ancient libraries of Irenopolis.

The members of the expedition are an elite platoon of volunteers. All it would seem save one. Gagged, bound both hand and foot, guarded by troops under hushed orders from the Black King himself is a she-elf. The observant have gathered from a her features and rare snatches of dialogue - never more than a few words - her to be from the Sakae communities of the Azuchev, perhaps entered in Ur's Registry. The latter would help explain her status, if not her presence.

Even when bound and gagged, her profound apathy is easily mistaken for aloof disdain, particularly in light of the generally brash but prideful nature of the Azuchev Sakae.
