Roger Hackett

Roger Hackett is reasonably well connected PR flack working to make Samantha Sullivan a star. Aside from his PR work he is also a litigator (lawyer), though he has never appeared before a judge except during bail hearings. For the most part his job consists of covering up scandals, keeping his clients from talking too much (be it to the press or the police), and keeping his client in the news. Despite being very supportive of Samantha he does not believe in her conspiracy theories, though he generally does not say so to her face.

Lessons Learned

  • You have to be careful ALL the time since you never know when THEY are going to try something!
  • Try oh try to reign in your companions before they go off half-cocked.
  • Samantha has learned that if she's the best talker it pays to get the rest of the group agree to let her do the talking

Background Story

Growing up in New York Samantha Sullivan dreamed of becoming a reporter. One of those heroic types that uncovered dark secrets and exposed conspiracies. Being studious and hard-working she found it easy to get through journalism school, but there her luck changed. By the time she graduated the new media was already pushing print media out, she wasn’t telegenic enough to make it on TV.

For the longest time she worked as a freelancer or part time writer, earning very little pay, and generally mooching off her parents. In desperation she even tried blogging, pestering her readers for donations, but that was at best a supplementary income. Then she tried her hand at being a private detective. That went somewhat better in that she was able to pay the bills, but it was hardly a living.

Throughout all of this she had been nice and quiet, enduring “The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune” with as good cheer as she could. On the outside that is, on the inside she festered with resentment and anger. It was now that she had her breakthrough as a conspiracy theorist, drawing links between the Galatea explosion, the United Nations, and assorted NGOs. Critics denigrated and ridiculed her writings, but for the first time she had a somewhat steady source of income.

Continuing her investigations she began to link this shadowy conspiracy with Chicago. There were various facilities there that acted without oversight, moreover it seemed that Novas might check in there but not all of them checked out. At least that’s what the rumour mill said. So off she went to investigate...

Apparently her investigations were not too popular, for one night as she was about to meet a source someone abducted her. When she came to again she was in a dark basement where she was subjected to a rather rough interrogation. Sheer fury washed over her, that and indignation at the idea that it would end here. Of course it didn’t as that was when she erupted.

In the aftermath all she wanted was to get away, in retrospect it seems that gave them a chance to cover things up. The police found that she’d gotten close to uncovering a corruption ring, where housing inspectors would give the stamp of approval to substandard construction. In her eagerness to get away from anyone officially connected to anything Nova related. Fortunately Nova’s were rare enough that pro-bono legal aid was easily attainable.

Afterwards she moved across the border into Canada, where she tried to start a new career. Initially this was not entirely successful, but then she met Roger Hackett who helped her connect with the right people. Before too long she had a steady income and more attention than she’d ever had as an online crank. Unfortunately she also had a temper problem, or perhaps it’s more accurate to say that she had lost some of her inhibitions. Either way she often found it hard to work with others, frustrating her agents with her angry eruptions, and often going off on week-long investigations that rarely turned up anything of interest.

Thus she’s looking for something more heroic, where her various problems won’t be so much of a liability.
