Reputation: In Cold Stars reputation can be critical to developing your character’s fate in the universe. Reputation is a measure of how a faction views you and those who follow you. It is possible to earn good reputation even amongst certain enemies if you act with honor and distinction though do not expect them to necessarily trust you right away even if you come to peace with them.

Gaining Reputation: You can gain reputation in a number of ways:
Carry out tasks for a faction.
Assist a faction in battle.
Fight the enemies of a specific faction.
Fight with honor and distinction.
Gain power and rank.

Losing Reputation: Just as you can gain reputation you can also lose reputation:
Fight a faction or its allies.
Carry out acts of piracy against a faction or in a faction’s space.
Attack innocents without cause (more specifically getting caught).
Lose too many personnel.
Abandon an ally on the field of battle.
Fail to carry out an assignment for a faction.
Looting too many ships/outposts.
Losing a ship.

What reputation is used for: The higher your reputation with a faction the more likely they are to provide you with options to purchase their best equipment. If you are a military officer in service to a faction this also can open the doors to getting newer better ships or elite units you otherwise could not access. For a freebooter or PMC, Captain reputation can also be vital for gathering recruits and resources to gain personal wealth and power.
It should be noted that no matter what path you follow having an extremely high reputation with a faction may open political options for your character and followers.
