In spite of several early setbacks involving encounters with dangerous native aquatic life, the tropical colony world of Nuovo Roma quickly became a popular destination for settlers and tourists alike. Unfortunately its often noteworthy visitors and proximity to the increasingly militant worlds of the Zodiac Secessionist movement made it an obvious target for political violence by rebel forces. A string of bombings and assassinations claimed the lives of several thousand civilians over the course of the war, along with a number of noteworthy officials including a European Union Commissioner of Colonial Affairs and a Silesian Foreign Minister.
As a response to the threat of terrorism along with the high potential for conventional military attack during the war years, Nuovo Roma devoted considerable resources to the construction of a formidable defensive network and to the establishment of a number of well trained and well equipped counter-insurgency and special operations groups. Although peace has returned to Nuovo Roma, it is now well prepared for any future outbreaks of conflict.
