History

New Granada is one of the major colonies of the European Union, home to a major DSF naval base as well as one of the EU's primary defense contractors: Thyssen-Krupp. That preeminence goes back to the discovery of a rare Post-Human data core during the terraforming process. That discovery drew the attention of the BAE-Saab Corporation and jumped the system to the top of the list for colonization. In the years after colonization the system quickly developed into one of the larger EU second stage colonies, and was even chosen as the site of a major Deep Space Fleet base aimed at providing security to said second stage colonies.

The Breakdown caught New Granada utterly by surprise but, luckily enough, the colony had the resources to reconstruct some catapults to reconnect itself with the rest of the EU. In a way the Breakdown also brought some good things for the colony as the aftermath brought full independence from the Department of Planetary Affairs and the other offices/agencies that oversaw the Union's colonies. And with the general breakup of most of the Deep Space Fleet, New Granada was given control of the local base and a fair amount of the ships and other equipment assigned/stored there – providing the foundation and the spark for the potent naval fleet that New Granada maintains as part of its colonial defense force. It was also in the period after the Breakdown that Thyssen-Krupp, a mostly home grown company, bought out the portions of BAE-Saab located on New Granada and quickly developed into a major player in the EU's defense industry.

New Granada was loosely involved in the New Mercia Civil War and related conflicts as a member of the EU, but the nation's main focus was on the actions of Haraway and their expansion etc. After it developed into a more open conflict the NGDF was involved in support of the DSF, and took full advantage of when the Harawayan fleet was out of position in Operation: Dawnstar - forcing Haraway to the peace table. In the wake of the wars, New Granada has turned the old naval base, or rather the relatively newer construction that took its place back over the DSF and has just generally stepped up to prominence within the EU. Despite maintaining a powerful fleet and being home to one of the EU's largest defense contractors the government of New Granda would prefer to rely upon diplomacy, but they do back that up with a rather large stick. Their propaganda tends to be subtle but tends to paint ZOCU in something of a bad light, although they are most respectful of ZOCU's capabilities then most EU nations.

Government and Military

Government Structure

Head of State

Under the semi-presidential governmental system of New Granada is popularly elected for a term of six years, with a maximum of three terms in office. He or she is responsible for the foreign policy of the nation and is also the commander-in-chief of the armed forces.

President's Council

While the cabinet, known in NG, as the President's Council is appointed by the president under the semi-presidential system it is responsible to Parliament which can force it to resign by a vote of no-confidence.

Parliament

New Granada is divided into large provinces and then into smaller districts, and the Parliamentary elections are held on the district scale. The Parliament is unicameral and sits for five years at a time, however the President may dismiss it under certain circumstances. The Prime Minister of the Parliament (the president is constitutionally required to appoint a leader of the party with the majority in the legislature) is responsible for domestic affairs.

Military Structure

New Granada Defense Fleet(NGDF)

The NGDF is a potent naval force despite the somewhat disingenuous title of “defense fleet.” Despite the presence of a major DSF base in system the NGDF relies upon home grown designs, mostly developed by Thyseen-Kruup. Having won acclaim in forcing Haraway's World to the peace table the fleet is one of New Granada's primary instruments in the ongoing cold war vs. Haraway.

  • The NGDF uses a mythological naming scheme for its warships and classes.

  • Second Fleet
  • 1st through 3rd Independent Task Forces

Dramatis Personae
Admiral Hendrik Dekker (NGDF, Ret.): Admiral Dekker, a career naval officer of Dutch descent, was the commanding officer of the NGDF 1st Fleet during the New Merica Civil War, ZOCU War, and related conflicts. He was also the mastermind and commander of Operation: Dawnstar – the New Granada offensive and blockade that forced Haraway to the peace table. Having recently retired from active service he is widely feted as a war hero in NG and makes his living through lectures and speeches. He is also rumored to be writing a book on Operation: Dawnstar, or at least the non-classified elements that he can publicly write about.

New Granada System Guard(NGSG)

The NGPG are the ground forces of New Granada's colonial defense force, and are rather evidently the junior of the two services. They are professional first world soldiers and are certainly not the worst out there but overall the troop quality, training, equipment, etc could best be summed up as average. They did not see much fighting in the recent conflicts, beyond the handpicked elite units that serve as marines.
