FBHmage

Straight-laced moe.

Background

Misaka was raised and trained from early childhood by the ancient archmage Muhime, Queen of Swords and lived most of her life in the small, sheltered Horizon realm of Mayohiga. Her mentor having been of strange disposition at best since at least the Edo period. Misaka grew up as the straight-laced voice of reason, well behaved and always desperately trying to maintain some modicum of propriety in her master and keeping her from getting too silly. Later, she was booted out of the house to various realms lower in the umbra, ostensibly to repay favors and complete her training but probably mostly just to tease her. After the latest traumatic stint at a Sengoku themed maid cafe in Akiba(True), she was finally deployed Earth itself for the first time.

Her appearance is a fairly petite Asian girl with shoulder length hair. While short on worldly experience, Misaka is pretty good with a sword and fulfills the cabal's requirement for a bit of muscle on the ground quite nicely.

Lore (Misaka)

1: She is the sole student of legendary archmage Muhime.
2: ?
3: Worked for some time at a maid cafe in Akiba(True) just before coming to London, Earth.
4: Misaka's avatar is exceptionally weak and hardly capable of magic at all without intense training and effort. Secretly, she's afraid of having wasted her illustrious master's years of effort.
5: Was actually born on Earth.

Backgrounds [21]

Avatar: 0

No more than a twinkle reflected in her master's eye.

Mentor: 1

Though powerful, the Queen of Swords is restricted to the deep umbra and has been quite distant for years.

Resources: 1

A small mundane allowance.

Talisman: 3

Prime 3/Arete 3/Quint 10/Difficulty 5/Str+5 Damage
The sword her master has lent her is Fantasy of Enlightenment, the First Sword of Mayohiga. It is thought to be the katana with which the eccentric archmage fought very early in life. Muhime recently noted that "It wasn't very useful after all. There are a lot of things it cannot cut." That said, the weapon is exquisitely made and was once renowned for the keenness of its edge. It can strike spirits and deals aggravated damage to the supernatural by default. Finally, the sword can slash through magic itself at difficulty 6, expending quintessence as in Parma Magicka.

Merits [18]

Prestigious Mentor

Muhime is a legendarily powerful Akashic archmage. Although not a player in Council politics, Muhime is still well known among elder masters who generally assume something must be special about her first and only student.

Sword Saint [15]

Misaka is p. good with a sword.

Flaws [-21]

Anachronism

Just a bit out of sync.

Compulsion

Her master's cook and cleaner.

Dark Secret

Hasn't come away from Akiba(True) completely free of vices.

Echoes

Things get just a little bit jidaigeki/wuxia around her.

Insane Mentor

And how!

Minor Phobia: Romantic Advances

Either gender.

Shy

Magic

Paradigm

  • As without, as within; the microcosm within oneself reflects and is a reflection of the cosmos.
  • The First was the sword; and its purpose is to cut; its foundation is separation; and there is nothing that it cannot cut.

Foci

Swords
The soul of the warrior is sharp enough to cut anything.

Do
Constant practice.

Meditation
Because the inner microcosm is ultimately the same as the outer macrocosm, searching within oneself can reveal the answers to even the most profound questions.

Rotes

Disciplines

Heart of Sword (Entropy 1, Mind 1) (active - 7 sux)
A warrior's soul is as sharp as her blade; a warrior's blade is as sharp as her soul. Through daily meditation and spontaneous shadow boxing or iaijutsu, the practitioner hones her senses to a razor edge able to strike weak points without hesitation or conscious thought. Damage difficulty is reduced by 3 and enemy soak difficulty increased by up to 3. In addition, mental and spiritual dice pools are separated as the trinity of mind, body and spirit are able to freely dance around one another.

Styles

Dance of the Aurora (Forces 1)
Kyokkou-ryu is a "silly and simple" style of kenjutsu Muhime taught to Misaka, said to once have inspired such mortal masters as Sasaki Kojiro and Kawakami Gensai. It has iaijutsu forms and techniques for other positions and states of armament but its focus is stand-up combat with a sword. Successes reduce difficulties for attacking and parrying with a sword.

Dance of the Twilight (Entropy 1, Forces 1)
A standing, unarmed soft martial art as gentle and constant as nightfall, appearing like a mix of Jujutsu and Aikido among other things. It emphasizes flowing footwork and instinctively knowing the weaknesses of the adversaries' stance at any moment. It excels against multiple opponents. Successes reduce difficulties of Gentle Fist and multiple opponents.

Techniques

Iron Mountain (Forces 2, Entropy 1)
When two blades lock, the intense pressure of this skill places the opponent in such a position that he is unable to back down without threat of being decapitated. Unless escaped, it can damage the enemy's weapon or break their fingers or hands. Iron Mountain can be triggered by locking blades immediately after parrying or being parried (if successful, it will interrupt a flurry) by effectively putting the combatants in a clinch. However, only Misaka can opt to inflict damage, which is dealt directly to the hands.

Zantetsu (Matter 2)
Zantetsu a general ability of any decent Akashic swordmasters to cleave through metal and other resilient solid materials. The modern legend of the katana ensures this is coincidental with metal objects of modest size under most circumstances. Less resilient materials like plastic, wood or even stone can be cut apart in greater quantities.

Cutting Gale (Forces 2)
A vulgar technique wherein the chi pulsating through the blade is made to lash out at range.

Shadow Spike (Forces 2, Matter 2)
Pins a distant opponent to the wall or ground with a thrown weapon. This usually occurs by catching clothing but will work just as well if it catches the target's shadow. The latter would obviously be vulgar.

Succession Techniques

Traditionally, a given Akashic style is considered mastered when the acolyte masters the style's succession technique. Muhime has a bad habit of calling numerous moves a succession technique. While they can be considered one-shot attacks, they can be given a duration since most don't directly deal damage.

Hidden Sword: Immeasurable Full Moon (Correspondence 2, Matter 2)
One of the succession techniques taught to her by her master, Immeasurable Full Moon is a special sword stroke that cannot be parried. It is possible to spot just before it strikes if the opponent knows it is coming. If properly executed, the attack cannot be parried as the blade will simply warp past any physical defense and strike true.

Hidden Sword: Immeasurable Crescent Moon (Correspondence 2, Forces 2)
Another of the succession techniques taught to her by her master, the Immeasurable Crescent Moon is triggered when an opponent successfully dodges a sword attack and Misaka follows the blow through in a certain way. Unless countered by true magic, the attack hits anyway. Since defenses are already committed by this point, it cannot normally be spotted like Immeasurable Full Moon can and it can be chained directly off if the spell was already prepared or with enough successes. However, a dodge that succeeds by a large margin might make the attack vulgar.

Slashing Space: Earthrise (Correspondence 3, Forces 2, Entropy 1)
A technique triggered by a successful fast-draw of a sword against a distant opponent. At Misaka's present skill level, it has a range of 108 paces but is obviously vulgar for most of that range bracket. By slashing away 107 of those paces, Misaka is instantly in range with a single step. Remaining successes are converted to Forces 2 damage.
