Joachim Benedikt Aemilius Mornstein-Montfort

Joachim Benedikt Aemilius Mornstein-Montfort is an officer in the Phoenix Empire's Imperial Guard and the present Serdar of the Bab-el-Mandeb. Neither an especially powerful nobleman or a particularly accomplished soldier, Joachim has nevertheless remained something of a constant in the background noise of capital society and steadily risen through the ranks to serve as first officer aboard the battleship Marengo and captain of the cruiser Malinska before taking up a series of postings for the Inspectorate. In addition to his military service, Joachim has written a number of published essays on various subjects as well as a book on the history of the last major Jardin Campaign.

He was born on Luxor, the only son of the late Vice-Admiral Aleksandar Benedikt Amadeo Mornstein-Montfort and Nezihe Dominika Mornstein-Montfort. Nezihe was killed when Joachim was seven, one of several unfortunate bystanders caught up in a botched assassination attempt on the life of the Dowager Empress while at the theater, and the Vice-Admiral died in battle against the Jardin fleet less than three years later at the Battle of Gravette. It was Joachim's grandfather, former Deputy Commandant Marjan Mornstein-Montfort, who oversaw his grandson's later education and then entry into the ranks of the Imperial Guard before his own passing left Joachim the only survivor of the main Montfort-Mornstein line.

Over the course of his life Joachim shown little interest in staving off the Mornstein-Montfort family's steady slide into relative obscurity, leaving the family estate on the island of Maclou and preferring to spend his free time frequenting the coffee shops and salons of the Imperial Capital. His only real ambition has seemingly been the leisurely maintenance of a petty rivalry with Captain De Martino, the leader of a more progressive clique of guard officers.

The Mornstein-Montfort Family
The Mornstein-Montforts are a much diminished but tremendously ancient noble family that traces its origins back to before the Founding Emperor truly solidified his hold over what would eventually become the modern empire. Though the Bab-el-Mandeb has been all but completely abandoned for many generations and the family has long since relocated to the capital, the head of the main branch still holds the ancient title of Serdar.
Caffè Antonius
An old coffee house in the Imperial Capital's eastern districts where Joachim and his circle of fellow officers can be found at on many leisurely afternoons and evenings. As a tremendous advocate of both their coffee and food, Montfort is one of their most frequent and high paying customers.
