Friedland
Government Type: Clan Alliances
Current Ruler: Allthing Council
History:
Founding 600 PD:
Friedland was established by a renegade ark ship which had separated itself from the Founding fleet immediately upon arrival in the Auriga sector. Unlike the other ships which fled the fleet those that lived aboard the Arkship Friedland chose to spend their long journey to a new world in hibernation rather than taking the generational approach. While this had the advantage to the colonists of meaning that they would see their new world it also saw them freeze technologically for the six century journey to their new homeworld.

Upon arrival the colonists aboard the Friedland landed their ark and used it as the foundation for a new city. Unfortunately for the people of this new world disaster struck almost immediately and destroyed much of the technological base that would be required to create a functional society. Within a generation the colonists had devolved into a technological level equivalent to earth’s 15th century and was only able to preserve that much thanks to the dedicated efforts of the few highly educated and skilled personnel that remained after the disaster. These individuals however were not all altruistic and many quickly used their skills and intellect to seize power over small groups of colonists forming clan based societies.

First Contact with SCG 791 PD: By the time the SCG scout ship Balefire arrived in orbit of Friedland the people had barely managed to claw their way up to a level of technology where steam engines were in wide use. The clan affiliations of the Friedlanders remained strong, infused with a sense of Darwinist survival of the fittest and some healthy doses of Fredrick Nietzhe.

Uplifting 791-830 PD: The SCG leadership saw the unspoiled world of Friedland and its inhabitants as a great opportunity for a social experiment and began “uplifting” the inhabitants of this primitive world with near modern technology. Going so far as to teach them how to use a hyperspace gate with the assumption the primitive people would take generations to fully grasp the concept.

Genetic Revival 835 PD: What the SCG leadership did not expect was that the “Survival of the Fittest” attitude of the Friedlanders would lead them to rapidly embrace genetic engineering and begin applying it wholesale to their own populace in an effort to produce a superior human. After a fashion the goals of the Friedlander clan chiefs were met and Homo Sapiens Imperius was born; a race of humans stronger faster and smarter than baseline humans that made up the vast bulk of galactic population.

Uprising 840 PD: As the Neo-Humans of the Friedlander clans spread and replaced the baseline people of their world they began to look upon the SCG and its people as a weak, sloppy and pathetic race unworthy of ruling over Friedland. To that end the Friedlanders betrayed and annihilated the local SCG garrison, seizing their ships and weapons and murdering the crews wholesale. They also achieved the unthinkable and seized control of their own hyperspace gate.

SCG Retaliation and disaster 841 PD: The SCG, their resources stretched near to breaking already was barely able to assemble a task force of jump capable warships. Their orders were to destroy Friedland with orbital bombardment to ensure that none of the Neo-Humans survived to threaten the galaxy.
This mission met with utter failure as the battlegroup was intercepted by a Friedlander fleet consisting of SCG ships seized from the previous garrison force along with Friedlander “Huscarl” class assault ships which carried detachments of neo-Human assault troops into the SCG fleets midst using special shields that allowed the small boarding craft to pass through the defensive screens of the SCG warships. Although many Huscarl class vessels were destroyed enough made it through to board the SCG flagship, the Sovereign class battleship Truman murder its crew and turn its guns on the remaining SCG warships. With the flagship gone and boarders seizing several more cruisers the remaining SCG ships attempted to withdraw but were mercilessly slaughtered by the Friedlander forces.

Treaty of Seta 845 PD: When the treaty of Seta was signed the Friedlander clan chiefs refused to make a formal appearance, instead sending a “base” serf as their representative. Friedland declared itself a sovereign state and announced that any who violated Friedland space would be slaughtered without question or remorse.

A History of Raiding 845-Present: The Friedlanders have since taken up raiding other nations, seizing ships and outposts, killing or enslaving the inhabitants and stealing anything of value they could take with them. Many attempts have been made to launch assaults against Friedland by several of the great powers including Hanshen, Daehan and Atlair but to date all attempts have been met with utter failure, massive losses and horrendous reprisal assaults.

Culture: Friedlander culture is focused around the “clan” a grouping of extended families bound by genetics, oaths and other feudal responsibilities to one another. Each clan has a larger alliance of clans it answers too and each of those alliances in turn answers to one of the three Allthings. Each Allthing rules over a third of the Friedlander population without question and acts as an arbitrator for the clans under their care ensuring that the naturally feudal and warlike nature of the Friedlander people does not cause permanent harm to the overall society.

Military: Friedland has no formal military as each clan has its own “warrior branch’ responsible for defending the clan and raiding inferior baser (normal human) worlds and territories. The Friedlander star fleets are made up of an eclectic mix of homegrown warships as well as ships from virtually every nation in the galaxy that have been seized in raids or during abortive attacks on Friedland itself. The super human capabilities of the Friedlanders makes them an ever present threat to any isolated ship or outpost but it also makes them a threat that cannot to date be removed without casualties far in excess of the potential gains.
