The Cerulean Magus was orphaned at birth due to her parents being taken by the Raksha, and was subsequently taken in by her rich uncle, who operated a paper mill on the Yanaze. Put to work in the crawlspaces due to her smaller size and nimble hands as a child, Magus very quickly learned the meaning of hard work and labor. Her only living relative was distant and cold, but rewarded her efforts with good tutors and an otherwise comfortable living. She quickly developed into her own as an artistic and mechanical prodigy, and earned the respect of her uncle's employees. Unfortunately, he took ill while she was in her late teens and passed on before either really managed to become comfortable with one another, but had the kindness to leave her with a stipend and eventual inheritance of the mill.

A longtime employee contested the inheritance, although support was always overwhelmingly on the side of the young heiress and scholar. When a local magistrate overturned his bid, he set fire to the mill in a furor.

The Magus would have died had she not found an unbound Aalu eating away at the rare books of her uncle's library as the flames had begun to spread to the owner's central homestead. When she approached, it neither fled nor attempted to murder her and instead spoke in a harmony of voices completely alien to the world. It offered her power and the right to live, and she accepted without question. A figure in cerulean robes emerged days later from the ashes of her childhood, bursting from an insectoid chrysalis and marching off into the unknown.

Merits and Flaws

  • Diet (Paper): Like the species her Coadjutor came from, Cerulean Magus eats paper for nourishment, although most of her sustenance is actually derived from respired essence. She can eat things other than paper, but they provide no nourishment. [1]
  • Twisted Sense (Taste): Due to the influences of her Aalu coadjutor, Cerulean Magus 'tastes' the words on texts she eats. [1]
  • Vice (Bibliophile): The synaesthetic experience of tasting words is thrilling and addictive, although harmless. Magus is also quite in love with reading actual books instead of chewing them, and has little self-control in either situation. [3]
  • Dark Secret (Spy): Infernal Exalts who willingly act against the interests of the Yozis are rare, and Magus is not one of them. When you spent a short lifetime weak and ignorant of the world, why would you act against the beings who raised you above that? [2]
