Altair Federation:
Government Type: Federal Republic
Current Ruler: President Terrance Howard
History:

Founding 650 PD: Like the Hanshen the Altair Federation is one of the few current nations that existed before the treaty of Seta was signed. Two mega-arks Charon and Liberty fled the founding fleet within hours of the transition into the Auriga sector seeking their chance to be free of the oppressive regimes of the now cut off Sol system once and for all. After 650 years the two ships completed their long journey to the Altair system where they quickly set up a colony and began working to rebuild a civilization based on the principals of democracy and liberty.

Thriving and New Colonies 700-820 PD: Having established themselves in their new homeland the citizens of the Altair Federation sought to spread themselves to new worlds to ensure the survival of their ideals. To that end they developed the Hypercom relay, a communication system which used hyperspace to communicate in real time across interstellar distances, something only the Federation managed to develop independently of the SCG. Using this new communication method half a million brave men and women set out on the hundred and twenty year long journey to their new destination in the Rigel system. Keeping in contact despite the vast distances the people of the Federation managed to still see themselves as “kin” even though generations would pass before contact could be established.

Contact with the SCG 821 PD: In the year 821 PD the SCG made first contact with the Altair Federation, offering them hyperspace gates in exchange for the Hypercom relay technology. Seeing this is an ideal trade the Federation Parliament agreed to the trade and quickly set out to bridge the divide between the Altair and Rigel colonists.

Growing Tensions 822-834 PD: It did not take long for the independent and liberty minded Altair Federation to begin to chafe under the oppressive plutocratic rule of the SCG. In fact it was during this time that the Altair Federation was one of the only cohesive governing bodies that managed to remain somewhat independent of the SCG and actively protest its attempts to establish hegemony over the galaxy.

Gathering Support 835-840 PD: For years the Altair Federation quietly gathered the political support of neighboring star systems that also displayed a desire to regain their freedom and liberties that been lost. When the Foundation War began the Altair Federation used these allies and good will to begin construction of their own armed forces to assert and maintain their own independence.

The Sunday War 845: After years of building their armed forces and watching as the SCG fought its futile wars against the League of Democratic Planets and the True Solar Front the Altair Federation Parliament decided that the time had come for military intervention. Deploying fifteen battleship groups and six hundred thousand ground troops the Federation engaged and defeated the SCG 12th fleet which held sway over the area of space that the Federation occupied. The SCG 9th army group surrendered even before the Federation troops dropped from orbit realizing that with the 12th fleet defeated they were truly cut off from all hope of support.

The war earned its name because it began on Sunday June 7th and ended Monday June 8th as the SCG sought to bring the Federation to the talks at Seta.

The Federation’s Rise to Power: With the treaty of Seta signed the Altair Federation found themselves ruling over a large territory with an abundance of Quanzium 39. This along with the fact that the Federation emerged from the war with very little infrastructure damage meant that they quickly became the mightiest industrial power in the galaxy. With this massive industry, large population and incredible wealth brought on by their ability to mass produce Quanzium 40 and mine the natural Quanzium 39 the Altair Federation spread its influence across many new systems within very short order.

Present Day: At present the Federation is the most powerful nation in the galaxy in terms of wealth, political and military might. Although they are territorially smaller than many other powers they are one of the leading producers of Quanzium 40 and as such have vast incomes from sales to virtually every other major power in the galaxy. On top of this the Federation also produces huge quantities of starships both military and civilian for independent systems, PMCs, house militaries and a myriad of other clients.

Culture: The Federation is culturally and ethnically diverse encompassing nearly as many ethnic groups as the SCG and openly accepting far more cultural variety from its member worlds. Freedom of speech, freedom of the press and freedom of religion are all core tenants of Federation politics and rights as well as the right of every citizen to a higher education and medical care.
Because of these views Federation citizens are some of the most patriotic people in the galaxy, viewing the Federation itself rather than any one leader or group as the best ideal for mankind.
The Federation is not perfect however and many citizens find themselves working long hours with less average pay than citizens of other nations that do the same job. This is largely because while citizens’ rights are enforced by the government Corporations have managed to secure themselves as “citizens” as well which often results in many member worlds having less regulations on business practices than is perhaps best for the average worker.

Military: The Federation Armed forces are arguably the most powerful of any one nation in the galaxy with an extremely supportive populace and government they never lack for funds, recruits or resources. The Federation Armed Forces are divided into three branches not counting the various Planetary Guard forces and PMCs employed by the Federation.

Federal Star Force: The FSF is the largest and theoretically most powerful space force in the galaxy though many argue that their ships are inferior ton for ton compared to those of other nations. The Federal Star Force is divided into five permanent fleets made up of ten battleship groups and numerous independent cruiser squadrons each. These fleets although permanent administrative groups can actually vary in strength greatly depending on situation and need as different battleship groups and independent squadrons are rotated in and out of different territories as needed.
Doctrine: The FSF doctrine relies heavily on power projection, besides possessing a very large capital ship fleet compared to that of most other nations the FSF’s battleship groups are also larger on average than most other nation’s equivalent formations as well.

Federal Army: Often called the “sledgehammer” of the Federation the army is responsible for any prolonged ground operations undertaken by the Federation armed forces.
Doctrine: The Federal Army consists of millions of volunteer professional soldiers with the largest permanent formation being a Division which is unusual as most nations prefer smaller more nimble brigade sized elements. It is because of these large formations that the army is considered the “sledgehammer” of the Federation as it often takes them a comparatively long time to deploy to a warzone compared to the ground forces of other nations. Once they arrive however the often bring with them far more organic heavy support elements than most other national armies meaning a single division of Federation army troops is often more supported by more heavy weapons and armor than an equivalent force from another nation.

Federal Espatier Corps: This force is the “fast reaction” force of the Federation ground forces. Along with maintaining a presence aboard every Federation warship the Espatier Corps operates “Expeditionary Units” of regimental strength designed to respond rapidly to a planet side crisis or combat situation. On average Espatiers are better trained and more heavily armed and armored than an equivalent army infantryman with a more aggressive and independent mindset than their army cousins.
Doctrine: The Espatier Corps provides security aboard Fleet ships and Space stations as well as some orbital habitats and research bases. Along with these duties the Espatier Corps provides troops for Expeditionary units of regimental strength designed to respond rapidly to planetary conflict zones and establish a beachhead for follow on Army forces. Typically once the Army arrives the Espatier force on the planet switches roles to providing fast moving strike forces and emergency response forces rather than frontline combat.
