A private colonial mission sponsored by multiple wealthy families from across the great powers of Earth, the Colonial Carrier Venture Star carried fifty homesteader colony landers, an accelerated model of homesteader colonisation in which the initial home was the lander itself, providing everything to begin setting up a self-sufficient colonial plot of land. Disastrously, upon entering orbit of Virginia an undetected alien satellite constellation attacked with laser weaponry, ripping the Colonial Carrier apart. The majority of the Colonial Landers were already awaiting launch and managed to detach before being smashed by debris though not before a surge caused extensive electrical damage to the civilian systems. Presumably due to their smaller size, they were ignored by the constellation and most managed to land, delivering their cargo upon a virgin terra compatible world, though devoid of the accumulated knowledge of mankind. Isolated robotic equipment survived, but it appeared that none of the lander's computer systems survived intact. Only the hardened navigation landing computers survived the surge, due to being surplus military hardware.

Over the centuries, what knowledge the forty four families had was lost, replaced slowly by myth and corrupted oral legend. What tools of the modern age they had, began to fail and their technology regressed severely. Arth is now home to just under a dozen feudal states, slowly emerging into the technological era of the late middle ages. During the disconnect an unknown anomaly related to the nearby Maelstrom disrupted the jump point, further isolating the system which has only been reconnected by the passage of the alien dreadnought in the year 2752.

The population rapidly expanded as the Viet diaspora flowed into a place built by distant cousins and by the 28th century the original American culture had been mostly relegated to place names and cuisine, though English does remain a common second language.

The Ultor system is well-known for its massive and thick asteroid belt, ripe for exploitation. However, distance from Sol meant it was essentially untapped until immediately before the Gateway Affair when the Ultor Mining & Metals Corporation was set up to begin the first stage of industrialization. Ore drags began towing large volumes of refined metals to Shenzhen, Parsis, Sogdana, New Acre and beyond. Ambitious plans for industrialization were planned but never came to pass, a victim of the Disconnect. Today, Ultor is still governed by the UMMC, though the local charter has been revised several times and in practical terms the corporation has evolved into a state collective.
