The Third Battle of Bastion Starzone was a naval battle of the Phoenix Republican Uprising, fought on 5 May 5322, between the combined fleet of Imperial ships led by the Grand Duchess Miziuru-Saria and the Jardin 10th Fleet for control of the Bastion Starzone. The Revolutionary Army and the Jardini Liberation Command had spread themselves thin across captured space. While many of their overtures to turn the Empire into a loose confederacy of self-sovereign kingdoms with the Phoenix Republic as primus inter pares met positive reception in other Grand Duchies, the diplomatic gesture severely backfired in the Osakan Reach. The Combined Fleet under the command of Miziuru-Saria, Grand Duchess of the Osakan Reach, responded by impetuously attacking the Bastion Starzone.

Though heavily outnumbered, the overstretched 10th fleet counterattacked in a somewhat piecemeal fashion, using advanced electronic warfare techniques to disguise their numbers. The battle quickly turned in the favor of the Phoenicians particularly when the 8492nd Combined Arms Brigade on the left wing broke through the front walls and captured the Super-Dreadnought Haussenhome. Fleet Admiral Julia Grasse was soon forced to retreat through the wormhole junction to Reunion before Imperial cavalry forces cut off their escape, leaving the system defenses to their own devices. The PRA garrison's official notice of surrender arrived at [0:00].

Unlike many other tactical Phoenician victories earlier in the war that nevertheless failed to affect the strategic situation, the Third Battle of Bastion Starzone was a major blow to the Jardin expeditionary force and the Phoenix Republic. The recapture of Bastion now put the Combined Fleet one wormhole jump away from the former Imperial Fleet headquarters at Reunion, where a successful victory would bring much of the Empire back into mutual communication. It also allowed Marshal Askar Michael ibn Ibrahim al-Gramont to break through to the Combined Fleet with recent intelligence and reinforcements that proved essential to the Battles of Hestia and the Broken Kybelle.

Background

After the failure to break the Imperial defense of the Osakan Reach at Honnoji Fortress, the Jardini 10th Fleet and PRA elements withdrew to Bastion. Both the Revolutionary Defense Committee and Section 2 of the Jardini Admiralty Staff suggested that the Osakan Reach was the likeliest source of counterattack. Several cavalry officers present, such as Colonel Ravshana Marika al-Lasalle, immediately broke into violent protest.
