Eyjólfr the Bold

Appearance

A tall, solid-bodied man in his late twenties, with a seaworn face and harsh expression, with dull grey eyes and light brown hair. His body is raked with scars and irritated by salt (although he does laboriously try to wash it off), clad in boiled leather lamellar over padded quilts, a wolf's furs tossed over his shoulders for warmth. Despite not being particularly wealthy, he is able to afford an iron helmet, solid pauldrons, bracers and padded gauntlets to protect himself from being disarmed.
His main weapon is a bearded axe of unusually fine make, although he has a tendency to just use whatever he can scavenge and hold together long enough to not die.
The helmet doubles as a cooking pot and bowl, and smells like boiled vegetables.

Background

Eyjólfr was the only son of a farmer, from a long line of farmers who settled their small and unimportant island. Rather than farm, he left the lands to his sister's husband and set out to join the Varangian Guard as many had before, earning fame and fortune. Despite not being much of a fighter or a thinker, he managed to do well for himself and be at the front of many substantial victories in the name of the Roman emperor, and was well-rewarded as a consequence.
After nearly ten years he took a pittance of gold and decided to see the world for himself, charting across former Sassanid Persia and eventually to mythical Hindustan. He was lost at sea trying to take the fishing slop that had seen him through to the journey out to open sea, searching for ancient and lost Lemuria.
