Dad (Berendei Sakharov)

• Iteration X

Dad grew up in the Soviet Union and more importantly in Iteration X. He had a pretty good thing going until all the wheels started coming off in the 80s. At the advice of some colleagues he got out before things got ugly, ending up in Japan working with some fringe elements until the upper echelons resolved their internal bloodletting. After getting involved in some turf wars he was captured by an Akashic assassin as part of aforementioned turf wars. Things were looking pretty dicey for Dad until reverse stockholm syndrome kicked in and sparks of an entirely different sort started to fly.

He spent a lot of the next couple decades applying a heaping dose of bleeding-edge metholodogy to the local Yakuza syndicate after his wife and some allies cut a rather bloody swath through the vampires that were in charge at the time. I'm told that was 'traditional', if a bit old-fashioned. But Mom can be a bit old-fashioned when the mood strikes. These Dad isn't persona non grata in awakened circles anymore and he goes to symposiums on Horizon sites fairly regularly. Victoria Station and Gernsback every so often too, even.

Of course Gernsback is a real place.

Mom (Miyamoto Miyako)

Mom's been a bit of a famous figure for a while, in some circles anyway. She's a direct patrilinear descendant of Musashi - yes, that one - and grew up in Japan of the 20s. Grand-dad Miyamoto didn't let the fact that he had a daughter instead of a son stop him though, and he trained the greatest swordsman (female ver.) of the era. I've seen (blurry) photos taken in the 30s and she looks exactly the same as she does today. The story of how she ended up fighting technocrats in 1990s Tokyo is a long and very bloody story. Pretty Lady Snowblood, so I understand.

Mom hasn't retired, not exactly, though things are different these days. She was retired for about two decades after that whole Yakuza thing I mentioned, up until a different group thought it might be a good idea to try and kidnap my sister and I. A whole ton of bad ends were handed out that night. Including the sitting Prime Minister. They said he died suddenly of a heart attack in his sleep due to work stress. Total lie. He deserved it though. Not just for that, lots of other dirty shit. When she's not righteously swording evil (which means 99% of the time) she plays at being a housewife which mostly means bossing the maids around, holding elaborate kimono parties and playing epic-tier matchmaker for those who cross her path.

No, it doesn't bother me that my mom can cut an armored car in half with just a katana. And no she's not going to find you a girlfriend, gross.

Big Brother (Miyamoto Mikelu)

My older brother Miheal (or Mikelu if you're Japanese, I guess, it's what he uses with Japanese friends and associated) was groomed to be the future head of the Miyamoto syndicate. Mom rolls her eyes or gets angry - depending - at all the stuff he gets up to, but Dad says it's just a phase. Besides, for all that Mihael drinks like a fish, takes all kinds of drugs and carries on like a typical playboy - helped by the fact that he looks like he just walked out of a particular handsome J-pop boy group with just enough hafu in him to be exotic and always has perfect hair - he's actually responsible as all get-out. He just likes to party.

Scratch that, he loves to party. He's all about finding limits and then stretching them.

When he's overseas, he uses Sakharov-Miyamoto for his family name, not that I expect that'll come up.

Sis

Sis (Miyamoto Akane)

No I am not asking my sister to go on a date with you! The fuck man!

Sis is perfect in pretty much every way. That probably makes me sound like some kinda siscon, but it's not that. She was meant to be. Mom really wanted a successor, some sort of destiny to be passed along. For real. Capital-D Destiny stuff.

She's been the most popular girl in school since forever. Since before we both skipped a grade, for sure. The Ice Queen of Fujisaka Gakuin. It's pretty fucking annoying that the girls line up to try to date me so they can get into her inner circle and even worse when the guys want to be friends just so they can try and ask her out. If you want to know why I'm so standoffish, that's why.

Am I dissapointed I don't have a destiny? Funny you mention that. Mom told me about that once. My sister has one hell of a destiny, but because we're twins I have the opposite. Not a bad destiny, not a lack of destiny. The opposite of a destiny. Like being outside? It was pretty esoteric and I didn't really get it at the time. Still don't.

Friends

Shimada Jun

Shimada's been a friend since mom helped his mom get over a bad divorce and eventually find a new husband. Remember that matchmaker thing? Yeah. Last year Dad also helped Jun's mom win the campaign to be Tokyo's second female governor. Nothing like some literally magic political analysis and vote-targeting to win a contested election.

Jun's part of Fujisaka's automotive club. He's a year older but we're in the same grade. I'm not going to say I've got an adult license because his mom pulled some strings but she totally did.

Ise Etsuko (Et-chan)

One of the couple of girls in the automotive club. Totally has a thing for Jun. Also easy to talk into wearing race queen outfits, especially if Jun asks.

Imagawa Ryou

More of a friend of Miheal's than mine per se, but he lets us go to his nightclub so long as we don't bring any trouble in with us. Like cops busting the place for underage drinking.

Boris Gagarin

• Kamrad

Boris is one of Dad's crew. And by that I mean he's a formerly-Iteration X cyborg, kind of like Batou from Ghost in the Shell. I've seen him jump out of a helo hovering a hundred feet in the air and just walk away like he jumped down a couple steps. Bad. Ass. Not that you'd know just looking at him, he's got a skinjob and all the seams are covered by clothes.

He's not exactly a bodyguard, though ever since that unpleasantness six years ago he's taken it on himself to be the first line of defense. Boris is a Kamrad, not Enlightened, but he's got a half-decade of Spetnaz training plus whatever the Iterators pumped into him on top of basically being a Terminator.

You'd think he'd be some scary-ass mofo, but he's not. He's a pretty skilled mechanic and these days is the club advisor and a pretty common sight at car meets in the area. He's still Dad's go-to guy to unscrew someone's head if they mess with any of the working girls though. He says his favorite way to do that is just be sitting in their favorite chair when they get home. They'll generally pay their bills when a six foot lots dude got in without triggering any alarms or anything.
