Princesses In Peril

Chaodan is a powerful and wealthy coastal kingdom, a land that has not seen true conflict since the Greenskin Wars of 1211-1214. But that was nearly thirty years ago and the land's guardians have let down their guard. Many dark and subtle threats have slipped in, hiding in the shadows cast by the prosperous life of the kingdom. Among these threats are the Heradith, a heretical sect of magic users that worship a dark and twisted version of Corthane - the goddess of wisdom, knowledge, secrets, and magic.

It was widely assumed that the Heradith had been mostly wiped out until they managed to kidnap the twin princesses, the king's only children. Their foul magic enscorcelled the royal palace's guards and slayed the princesses' loyal bodyguards while agents within the very household enabled their entrance and escape. You are adventurers of all stripes - warriors, mages, rogues from Chaodan as well as from distant lands and shores. But you all have on thing in common - you have all earned the confidence and trust of the royal family. Unwilling to trust to their own forces after discovering Heradith agents in their own household, they have turned to you to find their daughters and bring them back safely.

Unfortunately, you have little to go on beyond the events of the kidnapping itself, what little is known about the Heradith, and a report from a now deceased spy that had recently reported uncovering a Heradith cell in a small eastern town.

The Heradith: The Heradith are an outlawed and heretical sect of mages, who follow a dark and twisted version of Corthane. Their founder, a powerful priest-mage at a cathedral in distant Kerdholdt, uncovered what he claimed was a long lost book of scripture containing the "true teachings" of our lady of wisdom. He taught this tainted learning to other priests and mages for several years before the Voice of Wisdom condemned his teachings as blasphemous and excommunicated the false prophet and his followers. The Heradith are anathema, and subject to the death penalty by both the law of the faith and the laws of many lands. However, regretfully, cults are still uncovered to this day - typically among the nobles and educated well to do who have the time and resources to study magic.

The Heradith follow the prophecies and teachings contained within the book their accursed founder discovered, and every major cell of the larger cult will have a copy of it. However the original was stolen long along and is thought to be in the custody of the cult's "Master." They hold strongly to the truism that knowledge is power and seek both power and knowledge through any means necessary, while a true follower of Corthane will seek knowledge with a wise heart and through ethical methods. Little is known about the inner workings of the cult beyond that it is organized into cells with three "circles" - Follower, Outer, and Inner. Only members of the Inner Circle know the full truths about the cult and report to the Master or a higher ranking member of the Inner Circle.
