Nicholas Novara came from relative obscurity as a landless noble turned clever ship captain. Given his skill in making trades, the "landless" part did not last long. Some skilled salvaging later, he had a small flotilla put together running trade and killing pirates who interfered. The smart pirates realized there were lots of opportunities in legal gray areas with the Novara organization. Better a less profitable career smuggling contraband to Bao parties than death in the vacuum.

What really made his career was locating the lost d'Este battleship San Michele. With this find, House Lambert offered him into their mercantile network, and he was given official title to the lands he had claimed unofficially. They made a point of not adopting him, which outsiders thought strange. Given that the Novara organization is run pragmatically, and there is not as much preference for nobles, it may have been a lack of patronage opportunities.
