Reknowned for its rugged reliability, dozens of Dachisky class heavy transports still ply the space lanes fourty years after their initial introduction. For their era they were the largest, fastest, most advanced and most expensive cargo ships on the market. Originally designed for long-distance hauls to distant colonies, these ships were built well and built strong. A decidedly juicy target for pirates, they were also some of the first merchant vessels to come standard with armour plating. Deemed too costly on smaller ships, the risk of losing a fully loaded Dachisky made it well worth the additional expense for many operators.

Given the numbers of Bison freighters still plying the space lanes, Examater Shipyards was prompted to market an upgrade kit to bring the venerable vessels up to current standards. Due to the extensive refitting, including replacing the entire drive core, the refurbished ships were given a new designation. While some owners appreciated the significant increase in speed, others chose to stay with the economical Bison, ensuring it continued service for over a century.

In the early days of colonization, bulk shipments of goods to and from frontier worlds were terribly inefficient. Particularly in the case of moving particularly large objects such as prefabricated habitat modules that were too large to fit inside an HLV, requiring on-site assembly. Enterprising shipbuilders came up with a number of novel solutions, such as building specialized one-time-use cargo pods capable of re-entry. But only one had the audacity to suggest designing a bulk carrier that was capable of taking such loads directly to the surface and unloading them directly. Originally fitted with a scaled-up version of a Galileo radiation shield for hostile environments, it remains to this day the largest space vessel class capable of atmospheric re-entry.

Kearney Heavy Interstellar Tug

Notes: Civilian ships count as 4x Base IP for transport purposes.
Following the loss of the jumpship SS Maximus to a pirate attack in 2167, the Kearney corporation of Eden began designing a new and ambitious class that would be more resilient to pirate assault. Unlike most merchant craft, jumpships are typically required to remain on-station for long periods of time awaiting their charges and are particularly vulnerable to pirate attack. To this end, the Kearney class is able to in part provide for its own escort by being capable of carrying a full aerospace wing as well as a number of sub-light frigates in addition to its charges. It also remains the only merchant ship in common service to carry armaments, but given the critical nature of its mission the loss of a jumpship far away from home is an unthinkable prospect for the ships and crews that would otherwise be stranded.

Zhèng Hé Treasure Ship

[12]

Named after the most famous mariner of ancient China, the Zhèng Hé freighters were built in the 2130s by the People's Republic of China with the intent of founding deep and rich trade links with the far-flung worlds of humanity. Far too large to transit atmosphere, they were instead equipped to carry multiple HLVs which would act as lighters, lifting and landing cargo. Colloquially known as 'treasure ships' by western press, for two decades they were the foundation for China's golden age.

Unfortunately, the construction of the trade catapult system rapidly rendered them obselete. Facing competition from smaller, faster ships the Zhèng Hés were forced ever-further outwards, travelling deep into the Rim on long and often dangerous expeditions. More than one never returned. The network of orbital elevators that has gone up in the past two decades has given them a new lease on life though, and once again these behemoths can be spotted in the inner systems, ponderously shifting bulk cargo between stars - far less glamorous, but no less important.

Special: Counts as 2,800,000 CP for Merchant Marine purposes
The massive freighter losses during the First Space War were a disaster for shipping companies and a godsend for shipbuilders. With national and private fleets decimated if not annihilated, queues for merchant shipping expanded faster than shipyards could lay down additional capacity. This forced renewal also led to a number of new designs. The most famous of these is the LH-3210 'Palletized Cargo Carrier,' a massive transport ship designed with wartime experiences in mind.

Equipped with the absolute latest in cargo-handling machinery and an powerful jump drive, the LH-3210 smashed all records for transport efficiency. Additionally, its radially-bound hull was impressively strong and furthermore, it could carry up to two dozen fightercraft, allowing it to practically be self-escorting during times of conflict. Unfortunately, this has led to an enormous price tag, and each LH-3210 costs as much as a battleship.

UN Fleet

Challenger Deep Survey Ships

[14]
Type: Cruiser
Tech Level: 2
Cost: 200 IP, 120 Delta Dust
Upkeep: 10 Supply, 20 He3
DP: 8
+1 Radiation Shielding
+1 Hangars
+1 Hyperwave Survey Sensors
+1 Hyperwave
-1 Weapons
+0 Arc-Plasma Rocket Drive
+0 Delta-Dust Jumpdrive
"Where no man has gone before" was the unofficial motto of the Challenger program, inspired by the famous line from Star Trek. First launched in the 2080s as part of the UN's 'Stargazer Triad' and immediately spreading out roll back the limits of explored space and to contact longshot colonies they rapidly lived up to their motto.

Designed first and foremost as long-endurance explorers, the Challengers were fitted with the most sophisticated hyperwave systems that the Sol nations could construct. The size of these early systems were so much that they in fact were built directly into the ships' keels. Comprehensive radiation shielding and a subcraft hangar ensured there were few natural hazards that could delay them in their missions. Many were further fitted with external tanking to further extend their already-impressive mission radius.

Long since superseded by newer and more modern exploration ships, the Challengers nonetheless set the gold standard for survey ships. (Un)fortunately, the Challenger's massive hyperwave and bulky habitat rendered it ill-suited for conversion to other roles and only a few hulls remain, almost all in graveyard orbits.

Galileo Planetary Exploration Ships

[15]
Type: Cruiser
Tech Level: 2
Cost: 160 IP, 40 Delta Dust
Upkeep: 10 Supply, 30 He3
DP: 2
+1 Aerospace Capable
+1 Armor
+1 Cargo
-1 Weapons
+0 Arc-Plasma Rocket Drive
+0 Delta-Dust Jumpdrive
The second of the UN's 'Stargazer Triad', the Galileo series planetary exploration ship were tasked with performing landings and ground investigations on worlds surveyed by the Challengers. While originally the design was similar to that of the Challengers, a radical new proposal from the ESA saw the Galileo turn into an immense (for the time) aerodyne ship capable of performing landings and take-offs under its own power. Built to last, Galileos were the most common ships in the UN exploration fleet and the design was found to be well-suited to conversion to more . . . military pursuits.

General Secretary Colonization Construction Ships

+1 Docking collars
+1 Cargo
+1 Factory
-1 Slow
-1 Firepower
-1 high profile
-1 Supply Upkeep
+0 Thermonuclear Pulse Drives

Iconic of the breadth and scope of the UN-led international colonization effort, the General Secretary colonization ships were and still remain the largest mobile vessels ever built by near-baseline humans. Stretching almost two thousand meters from stem to stern they were self-contained cities. Their captains were also the mayors of almost twenty thousand souls and commanded more industrial hardware than most colonies of the era.

In service for more than half a century, slowly following the Challengers and Galileos into the Rim, the General Secretaries fabricated countless copies of terraforming hardware, habitats, navigational beacons and even complete ships. If the Challengers went where no man has gone before, in their wake the General Secretaries left Civilization.
