[b]Early History:[/b] The Union is a fairly recent addition to the Arm. It was formed when a cloud of wandering sentient nanobot explorer-probes launched by a Precursor civilisation encountered a fledgling race of rather unusual bipedal sentients in an otherwise unimpressive sector of the Galaxy. The said sentients exhibited low level quantum probability manipulation capabilities, including short ranged quantum teleportation. By now, the sentient swarm had been wandering the galaxy for millenia, and it was well aware of its creators' demise, however, its core directives remained unchanged; to seek out interesting, promising life forms, and nuture their growth, and in the primitive sentients it saw a final end to its mission. It exhausted itself modifying and producing a new generation of nanomachines and its progeny and infected the entirety of the primitive population. Within a generation, lifespans increased dramatically, infant mortality rates dropped to near zero.
Once the entirety of the previous generation succumbed to the arrow of entropy, the nanomachines revealed themselves. Within each person was an artificial intelligence easily of equal intelligence to their own, each claiming benevolence and a willingness to help. The results were... predictable in hindsight, as the sentients attempted to reconcile the massive cognitive dissonance. Some coped and others couldn't. Fortunately, the primitives were spread relatively widely, preventing any irreparable damage or loss of life from occuring in the ensuing chaos. The AI s acted quickly and decisively, rendering their hosts unconscious before any further damage could be done. They then mulled over the unexpected situation before realizing that they had failed to sufficiently educate their hosts in ideas and concepts that were mundane to themselves. Over the period of several months, the entire Zi'chre'n race was sleep-taught while their bodies lay protected by stasis fields.
When they awoke once more, they recognized the alien voices within their minds as friends, not a symptom of insanity. The AI s pledged subservience, and were surprised when the Zi'chre'n refused, instead recognizing them as equals. For better or for worse, the paths of both flesh and machine were now intertwined, and thus began the Union's path to the stars.
