"I was only a kid when the monster hunters found me. They took me under their wing, and I began my studies as an Enlightened Scientist of the Technocracy. Karen took me under her wing - one of those rare NWO types who knew a cup of coffee and some comforting words could work just as well as a mindwipe. Her unit did paranormal investigations and got rid of problem RDs. It feels so weird saying that now. I was supposed to decide which convention to join, but I never got beyond being what your would call an acolyte. I got a pretty well rounded education there, and I met several good friends. Technocrats are normal people, which is what makes them so damn scary. People who actually believe they are doing the right thing are the worst enemies."

"I don't know WHAT we did that got someone angry, but it must have been crazy evil stuff. My entire team - my friends for years - found themselves on the wrong side of a plasma cannon. At that point, I did something I had never done before - I tried to will a defense into being just like an RD. What did I have to lose? I had cast my first spell, and amidst the charred corpses of my friends I remained alive. That will haunt me forever... After I left the scene, I knew I could never go back. I was a Reality Deviant, and I was technically dead. The only people I could turn to were the so-called Traditions of magic. You guys and gals, in other words. I still have some trouble with the whole magick thing, so please be patient with me. I'd like to learn how you do reality manipulation - my mentor has showed me some of the Electrodyne laws, and I'm trying to use them with the laws of Enlightened Science that I have used for so long. Someday I'd like to see us helping Sleepers and stopping monsters again, but that will take some work...

"By the way, I have a friend who helped give me a new life. I wasn't called Derek back then. Think of it like the Magickal Witness Protection Program. We shouldn't have to worry about the Ivory Tower coming after me more than you. He does ask me for favors now and then - he took a big risk to cover my tracks.

Pattern Mechanics - A Science for Tomorrow!
For some time, a number of Technomancers in the Comparative Pattern Control Dynamics Society have been attempting to study the fundamental nature of reality manipulation. In conjunction with the more traditional mystics of the Society, the leading Scientists have developed the theory of Pattern Mechanics. While still only having a small number of adherents, it has been gaining a steady amount of adherents and a number of articles discussing it regularly appear in Paradigma.
  • Just as Quantum Mechanics builds upon Newtonian Mechanics, Pattern Mechanics is the natural extension of Quantum Mechanics. Fundamentally, Pattern Mechanics establishes that nearly anything is possible, within certain boundary conditions, and that the outcome of a series of events is distributed dynamically until an observer collapses it into a static pattern. Magick, as groups such as the Hermetics define it, is based on the Awakened being controlling the collapse directly.
  • Science is a superior construct to the purely dynamic element, as it is more reproducible. Society adherents understand that sometimes a dynamic procedure is necessary, but that measures must be taken to ensure the collapse can occur. As an aside, Hermetic symbology is considered a valid science alongside the various Technomancer paradigms, in part due to the efforts of Mistress Candace Blackrose, bani Fortunae, the Society's lead expert on probability dynamics.
