==Timeline==

June 14th, 2134: UN Exploration Vessel Magellan discovers a system along the rim with a red dwarf star, a single gas giant and the remains of three planets in the form of several asteroid belts. It is given the designation XS-49 and earmarked for further exploration later.
January 5th, 2136: UN Survey Vessel Chandrashekar surveys the system and finds it rich in many valuable resources. It is also surprisingly clear of feral drone infestation. It is earmarked for a dual-purpose outpost, both mining resources and providing a jump-off point for further exploration into the rim.
September 9th, 2137: UN colony ship Cassini is dispatched to settle the system.
December 3rd, 2137: Cassini arrives and begins initial operations.
December 3rd, 2138: After a year of mining, refining and construction construction the first habitat is finally completed. It is named The Cook Habitat in honor of the explorer, James Cook. The system gains the same name and now holds 5,000 inhabitants. The HEC begins regular shipments of He3 to the system till its infrastructure comes online.
February 5th 2139: Mining and refinery infrastructure goes online, but the refueling infrastructure is still under construction. Due to an increasing feral drone presence in the surrounding systems however a sudden requirement for a defensive fleet comes to light.
February 23rd 2139: Refueling infrastructure goes online and the colony becomes a fully-fledged outpost along the rim to serve further exploration into the rim. At the same time the first make-shift shipyard comes online.
April 1st 2139: First ship completes production - the cruiser Jutland. It is a simple low-tech but modular design. Regular Cruiser production begins on a three-month cycle.
June 4th 2139: First combat occurs in the system as feral drones attack. They are repulsed successfully, but the Jutland takes heavy damage.
June 6th 2139: Second cruiser Kursk is completed just in time to repel a second drone attack. Resources and raw materials are diverted from the outbound shipments into local factory production. Distress signal is sent to the UN to send ships to aid in defense of the outpost.
January 1st 2140 Status update: By now the outposts has expanded to 8,000 inhabitants - mostly from immigration and gravitation from other failed mining outposts in the rim region. Feral drones attack continue, but the UN fleet is delayed in its arrival. A further two destroyers, the Lafayette and Thunder have been built, but further production is shut due to a lack of trained personnel to crew the ships. It is estimated the colony will only last two more months before evacuation is needed.
February 4th 2140: The UN fleet finally arrives, consisting of the Battlecruiser Malta, three escort cruisers and several destroyers.
February 21st 2140: The Malta successfully repulses the feral drone incursion in the system and moves on to the surrounding systems to clear out infestations there and generally conduct operations within the region, using the habitats as a base. Production resumes as normal; however immigration into the outpost continues as more and more rim expeditions are facing difficulties. Shipments to the core resumes as normal.
January 1st 2141: The original mission leader, Marcus Strongberg perishes when his yacht experiences an engine failure and collides with an asteroid during the new year's eve celebrations. He is succeeded by his 2IC, John Freeman. March 1st 2141: Population has increased to 12,000 and a new problem has arisen: overcrowding. Freeman orders the expansion of the asteroid mining installations into full-blown habitats. By now it the Cook Habitat has become an immensely successful endeavor and has become a popular refueling outpost for not just core ships but other rim worlds as well.
January 5th 2145: By now several asteroid habitats have come online and the outpost now houses over 90,000 inhabitants. Due to this the UN officially declares it a full-blown colony and gives authorization for limited self-governance. John Freeman remains in charge, but takes the title of Administrator.
February 4th 2150: After 10 years of exemplary service in the rim, the Malta is recalled back to the core for retirement. Much of its crew opt for retirement within the Cook habitats or take up duties as commanders of the new ships being produced.
January 1st 2151: The colony grows steadily over the next half-decade as things remain generally quiet. By 2150 its population is now well over 150,000, spread out across dozens of asteroid habitats while it's fleet has expanded significantly as well.
