"In Aulus they say that all men are born equal, that the son of a great Senator can grow to be an imbecile as likely as the daughter of an idiot can become Consul. Unfortunately, it is often the case that a rich imbecile will rise just high enough to cause trouble, whilst the gifted daughter of a pleb will struggle to be recognized. "

The Aulan Republic is a demokratic society of the Aulan people, governed from the capital city of Aulus, the largest city in the known world. For well over a thousand years it has endured disasters, civil wars and several attempts to overthrow it’s demokratic institutions. It’s people can be intensely proud to the point of arrogance, regarding the rest of the world, in particular the northern kingdoms as ill-mannered barbarians. The Populii of the Republic regard all monarchies as tyrants.

History

The City of Aulus lies on the shores of the large freshwater lake Romulus, which feeds the river Remus. Ruled by a mighty Sorcerer, it's people rebelled and overthrew the last king almost a thousand years ago, instituting a system of Republic democratic rule. A fierce people, their mastery of strategy and unwavering self-belief soon saw their territory expand to their neighbors.

Early History

Kysar Reformation

Gaius Sullus Kysar was a Roman Senator and Consul who after conquering the northern tribes was plunged into a bitter civil war by the maneuverings of his fellow Consul, who feared the charismatic popularity he had with both his soldiery and the plebian classes of the Republic. After being declared an enemy of the state, he marched his professional legionaries across the Maevi and towards Aulus, seizing the city though military force. He forced the Senate to declare him Dictator for life and with the popular support of the plebians, intended to reform the Republic and rule it until his last days.
Though he had his supporters, most Senators believed his actions heralded the end of the Republic and a return to tyranny. Their attempted assassination ended in failure however, though Kysar was severely wounded. Though the perpetrators were executed to a man, Kysar reflected on the danger of his actions to the future of the Republic. With the likelihood of death awaiting him in the next few years, he instituted a series of reforms he hoped would prevent another like himself of being able to seize control of the Republic, nor allow Senators to use their judicial power to corruptly curtail a rival. He created the Provincial levy, limited the number of Professional Legions and increased the power of the plebians civil assemblies.
The Kysar Reformation were the first steps towards universal suffrage in the Republic, beginning with universal sufferage within the city of Aulus itself. Following his death, the Republic adopted his adjusted calendar, marking the year of his reform as year 0, Kysar Reformation.

There are four principle regions in the Aulus Republic.

The richest province in the Republic, Rhevani stretches from the confluence of the river Maevi to the island of Selinus

Culture

Military

The Aulus Republic military is regarded as an arm of the state, both to defend it's territory, people and interests as well as to carry out it's will as an extension of the Republic's political and diplomatic power. The Republic makes no pretensions that the military merely exists as a defense.

Army

The Aulus Republic has a relatively small professional army, four legions of 4200 plus cavalry. This however is heavily augmented by a reservist force known as the Provincial Levy. Whilst the Republic has the coffers to sustain a large professional force, there is considerable resistance to such a policy due to the experience of civil war that occurred before the Kysar reforms. It is a strongly held belief that professional soldiers represent a threat to execution of the Constitution of the Republic, leaving it vulnerable to overthrow by Generals.

Professional Legions

Provincial Levy

The Provincial Levy is a force of reservists, who must report for yearly training of several weeks before campaign season begins. Whilst they are often not called up, they serve as a potential pool of soldiers who can be augment the professional forces in case of invasion or should the Republic wage war beyond it's borders. In return for being available and meeting certain physical fitness standards, they receive reservist pay, increasing slightly for each year of service. They can in theory, be called up at any time should the need arise.

Mercenary Auxiliaries

Conscription

In times of dire need, the Republic can forcibly conscript citizens to serve for a campaign season.
