Overview
Not originally part of the Second Stage Colonization programs, the transgene colony of Asper was unlucky enough to find itself directly in the path of the European Union's march outward from the core colonies. It eventually fell under the direct control of the EU, that organization very much unwilling to have a major independent transgene population occupying a key point on its lines of communication outward. There was little that the inhabitants of Asper would have done to stave off this almost inevitable conclusion.
While the Zodiac War gained independence for transgene colonies more distant from the bastions of the core, Asper remains under the control of European forces. While the largely liberal EU is far from overtly oppressive, the transgene residents of Asper are generally limited in movement and action and a major EU military force is stationed in the system. So long as the more radical transhuman colonies pose a threat to Europe, it seems unlikely that its iron grip on Asper will loosen.
