History
Akahi was born to an isolated and highly traditional clan of Kitsune living high in the mountains. Her blood red fur and intense demeanor unsettled the village shamans, and her birth was heralded as a dangerous omen. The village ostracized her and her family for years, and on the dawn of her sixth birthday, the village shaman decreed that she should be put to death to cleanse the sin of her birth. Her parents disagreed, and attempted to escape the village with her- but first her mother was captured, and her father cut down. The shaman mocked her inability to protect them, before knocking her off a cliff to fall to her death.
But Akahi survived that fall, shifting instinctively into fox form and managing to land- somehow- with only half the bones in her body broken. Still, she dragged herself away, lest any search parties come to finish the job.
In constant pain, and with hunger ever growing, Akahi thought the end had come for her when she was rescued by a traveling Ifrit- a man known to the bards as the Roaring Comet, a monastic master of some fame. Seeing only an injured fox kit, he took her in and nursed her back to health with the intent to release her back into the wilds. But soon he grew to care for her, the little fox kit that watched his practice sessions every morning, and faced a tough choice of what was best for her.
The decision was obviated however when he woke one night to the sounds of... someone practicing in the field by his tent. The young fox kit was gone- and in her place was a young girl. After a brief confrontation, reconciliation, and much crying and acceptance, the Roaring Comet offered to take Akahi on formally as a disciple, an offer she gratefully accepted. The transition of their relationship from wanderer and pet to father and daughter slowly brought Akahi out of her shell of isolation, and she eventually adopted some of her mentor's intense demeanor.
Learning strong convictions and dedicating herself to her new life, Akahi is still haunted by her past. Her memories of that time are fleeting, but she can't make herself forget the malicious smirk of the village shaman as he threw her off the edge of the cliff, nor his laughter as her father was cut down by his disciples.
She spent many years yearning for revenge, before her mentor sat her down and explained his own past- his trials and conflicts, and how he too once sought vengeance. He spoke of the pitfalls of that sort of worldview, of how it can eat away at oneself until nothing else is left. Akahi promised him, if nothing else, that she wouldn't pursue vengeance actively- but also that if the opportunity presented itself to her, she would take it in a heartbeat.
Today, Akahi lives in the island district of the City of Motif, having struck out on her own to find her own fortune and advance her understanding of the art. She spends most of her time in her human form rather than the form of her birth, only reverting to her birth form or becoming a fox to throw off pursuit or disguise her presence.
Appearance & Personality
Akahi has intense violet eyes, and red to magenta hair- fur in her other forms. In each form she trains an intense demeanor, though it shines through most clearly in her human form.
Akahi's human form is appropriate to her age- and she appears as a short, waifish fourteen year old girl. Often she is mistaken for a lost child, or occasionally a street urchin. Though technically on the cusp of adulthood, her constant use of this form has resulted in a more childish outlook on life, and she is prone to viewing things in terms of absolutes.
As a Kitsune, Akahi is tall and curvaceous, a fully mature adult by Kitsune standards. She is often embarrassed by the reactions of others to this form, as she has spent much of her childhood in human form among humans at various monastic temples, and is unused to being engaged as an adult. With no end of admirers and suitors when she takes her birth form, Akahi has taken to cultivate an aloof and intense attitude, scaring the weaker willed of them off. Those that persevere might begin to discover that behind her cold exerior, Akahi is a rather lonely but caring individual constantly striving to prove herself.
As a fox, Akahi is an adorable tiny little monster, often mistaken as a neighborhood pet much in the way the local cats are, or occasionally as a familiar to a wizard. Showered in affection and all the free dinners she can eat, Akahi often assumes this form when the pressures of appearing normal become too much.
Akahi is headstrong and intense, and while she follows a personal moral code and respects order, she can also be brutal and remorseless against those she decides are deserving of such. The practitioners of the monastic style she follows emulate the dragons, and often serve as roaming arbiters, ending disputes with dialogue, combat- and in some cases killing as necessary. If Akahi decides that someone is deserving of death, to her the outcome is already forgone. Getting her to that point however, is remarkably difficult. In her own words "Death is the ultimate escape. How will they learn from their punishment if I let them run away from it?"
Typically, she is very direct, and often quite terrifying for a young girl. Her eyes and colouration can be quite unsettling, and her kitsune form seems more predatory than most. She takes great joy in enacting justice, and believes strongly that society should support the less fortunate.
One of her most defining features however, is- to use a phrase coined by her mentor- that she is 'very unwise'. This typically manifests in a curiosity the envy of all the world's cats, and an often flagrant disregard for personal safety. While a commoner confronted with a strange magical object might wrap it up and bury it in the yard until a wizard can be called upon to identify it, Akahi is the one holding it up to the sky and trying to make it work, or pointing its business end at her face and shaking it.
Otherwise, she is loyal and caring to those she lets see past her thorny exterior. She is exceptionally dedicated to the teachings of her mentor- the man known as the Roaring Comet- and will not let anyone get away with insulting him or the teachings, often challenging others to spars or resorting to pranks and sabotage to get the last laugh.
Combat Style
Akahi has been trained as a Monk of the Scaled Fist and taken the first steps towards mastering Dragon Style. As such, she prefers unarmed attacks over those made with monk weapons, although has accrued a number of such weapons to use as needed. As a highly mobile combatant, Akahi uses her unsettling demeanor and predatory appearance to enhance her ability to demoralize enemies.
