Ram

The Ram is a relatively young class of warship, dating to the decade before the Great War where advances in high-speed engines, ether torpedo generators and high-tensile armor were combined in a novel form of attack ship; the torpedo ram. While ether torpedoes had long been used as a close-range weapon against opposing men'o'war (alongside blast-carronades), their lack of range meant they were poor offensive weapons. The torpedo ram changed that, by loading these potent weapons on a fast, protected spaceframe that could literally ram through enemy defenses and fire multiple torpedo blasts at enemy ships, protected against fast-firing guns and too quick for heavy artillery fire. Originally intended to be used against ships at anchor, a trio of early League torpedo rams were throw into action at the Ligenhead Skirmish where they sunk the Khanate capital ship Emperor Zhuge Hang at no losses to themselves. The Ram Race was on.

Over the subsequent decades the torpedo ram shed most (if not all) of its armor in exchange for even greater speed and agility as gunnery improved, likewise adding multiple rapid-fire guns to engage other rams in gunnery battles. By roughly two decades ago the contemporary ram had fully matured into its current form as the premier torpedo attacker and fleet escort, equally capable of delivering torpedoes against capital ships as engaging hostile gun-skiffs while still having spaceworthiness sufficient for fleet operations.

Carrack

The largest ships normally used by sky militia, carracks have existed in evolutionary forms for centuries. Essentially sturdy cargo ships built from the keel up to be fitted with the accountrements of combat, carracks straddle the line between 'civilian' and 'military'. While more expensive both initially and operationally than simpler freighters, carracks

Brig

Gun-Skiff

Small and short-ranged combat ships (boats, really), operating off surface bases or skiff-carriers. They range in size from 50 to 250 tons and due to their lack of size have effective endurance of only a day or two at best - they have no true accomodation spaces. Too small to fit a full ether compressor for plasma torpedoes they instead use energy caps and are pre-charged before deployment. Smaller guns of no bigger than 2" are fitted for fighting other gun-skiffs and small craft. They are one of the most popular sky militia craft; cheap fast and not requiring many crew. Many free traders have at least one of these strapped to their decks.

And in more peaceful times, racing skiffs are a common hobby vehicle.
