<IXJac> Mari’s grandmother was raped by Caldwell as part of a magickal ritual, Mari is actually his granddaughter, and the reincarnated soul of Amaryllis de Sable. When Caldwell realized this he had a bit of a BSOD. Took it as a message from the Tellurian, and he’s been trying to atone ever since

I don't recall exactly what I had for that but it was more they died because of who Mari was, which is how Caldwell found out about the reincarnation of Amaryllis.

<IXJac> Basically, Caldwell was screwing around with powerful umbrood and used Mari's grandmother as part of a ritual, then moved on.
