The Celestine Existence
Centuries ago, the world of Carinthia was threatened by the incipient explosion of its sun. With an undeveloped space sector, there was simply no way to evacuate any substantive fraction of the planetary population and with the ether storms raging at full strength, making a crossing to another star would be fraught with danger. Nonetheless, plans were drawn up to save as many as possible - until a radical proposal was floated. Experimental technology would be used to copy the mind-states of the population to computer storage and in this compressed format they could evacuate with far less material requirements. Desperate for any solution to pending armageddon, it came to pass with only minimal debate.

Today, the Celestine Existence has became something bizzare, a state - if such a term can be applied to it - that has almost became a parody of itself. Having arrived in their destination system only to find it uninhabitable, they simply stayed in their hermetic servers. In this disembodied state they crafted vast virtual worlds and nearly forgot what it was like to be physical. Now they are split between a number of strong personality-engrams each of which commands the loyalty of large factions of the uploaded populace. Each has their own goals and methods, though in general they share a loose ideology supporting the evolution of humanity away from pathetic meatbag status living on boring spinning rocks.
