Brotherhood, Strength, and Fortitude...in the face of the angry night!

For thousands of years humanity spread out across the galaxy, borne on a network of wormholes and the gateways used by a mysterious, extinct civilization, a design eventually re-engineered by humanity. Hundreds, thousands of systems were filled with humanity and it's many offspring, expanding ever outwards, confident that they were alone in the universe, they found that they were not.

In a distance system a group of explorers found and activated what they believed to be a simple gateway device like so many they had found before. Unknown to them however, horrors lay beyond. The Bone Cathedral and its creatures swarmed through, and one by one the worlds of human civilization fell to it.

Finally, humanity was driven back all the way to Sol, facing utter annihilation when the Nexus intervened and pulled it into a new space.

Geography

Living on planets is seem as a little old fashioned by most Solarians, with most of the population living in vast numbers of space habitats and small megastructures all around the system. Huge amounts of material has been imported from other systems to build these structures over the millennia of human expansion, and many of them are exceptionally fine architectural marvels, though they are now packed with refugees.

Government

Sol is ruled by the Combined Nations Council, with representatives bought forward from each of Sol's many hundreds of separate states and habitats. In practice long years of war have left the government in the hands of a largely self policing elite, created from the CN's internal bureaucratic structures, and bought fourth from the military and other institutions.

It is unlikely this structure will survive the end of hostilities. If indeed the war is now over.

L'enfant terrible

Towards the end of the war, Sol created a series of genetically engineered children, who are unofficially known as L'enfant Terrible. While genetic engineering is nothing new for the Solarians, the wild, cutting edge procedures used to create this new generation would never have passed in earlier eras for fear of the consequences for society and for the individual. Yet every scrap of intelligence was needed to work against The Bone Cathedral and its ilk.

While L'enfants were able to slow the Cathedral's progress, even they were unable to turn the war around, with the seemingly infinite numbers of Cathedral entities able to eventually overcome any defence. The majority are now in their late teens, having undergone significant post birth genetic augmentation.

Trained almost from birth to win the war, how L'enfants will respond to peace is an open question.
