History
The emergence of fifth wave feminism, particularly in Asia, parts of South America and Europe in the 2050s came at a fortunate time. By the time the first long-shot missions began in the 2060s, a feminist network, linked by the ever higher bandwidth communications links that strode the globe had formed, including some extremely radical elements. As had happened previously, some of these components decided to form isolated communities of their own away from (as they saw it) the oppressive touch of patriarchy.
The Long shot colonial missions offered some of them a way to set up truly experimental communities that had never been available to their sisters of previous generation. Several groups built up funds and equipment (with the help of several Icelandic financials formed after the crash of the late 2000s) and petitioned the post humans to form a long shot mission.
When the colony expedition that would become Haraway boarded its colonial jump ship at the beginning of 2065, very few people back on earth thought they’d succeed. Against all odds however, they did.
The colony landed on the world they named Haraway after most of a year of space travel. They found it beautiful, but all too rich in heavy metals, which had worked their way into almost every aspect of its flora and fauna. While these heavy metals had many applications in medicine and industry, they would be in the long term, extremely dangerous to the health of colonists.
Rather than attempt terraforming which might have destroyed the world’s vibrant natural ecosystem, the colonists chose to adapt themselves to the planets conditions, not a particularly difficult problem for a largely transgenic population, and the colony adopted Transgenics wholesale, not only to adapt to the planetary conditions but as a bi-product of the need to reproduce with only women.
Efforts to engineer a new generation and create resistance to the planets conditions were by in large successful, and against the predictions of many commentators when they left earth, Haraway flourished. Heavy use was made of growth tanks and levels of population and genetic modification steadily escalated. New technologies were developed locally, as Haraway was all but completely out of contact with earth, having left before the hyperwave network could really get going. There was even some trade in information, but the colony stayed largely isolated well into the 22nd century.
Recontact in the 2120s was something of a shock to Haraway, who while they had expected human space travel eventually had largely discounted the possibility of it being so soon. Contact with the Stargazers bought hyperwave broadcasts from earth, and a sudden influx of new ideas and technology. Fortunately Haraway was able to supply knowledge it had gained over the years and use this to gain technology in areas where they’d been falling behind. Recontact also accelerated the Harawayian space program, and saw the production of the first Harawayian military space vehicles, mostly relatively low payload transatmospheric fighters and heavy lift vehicles.
The 2130s and 2140s saw contact with the core begin in earnest, with the arrival on Haraway of several EU corporate interests. These two decades, known as the twenty years crisis on Haraway are seen by many Harawayians as a loss of innocence. Haraway first attempted to negotiate with the EU and various corporate interests led to a complete failure to gain the results they wanted. Indeed Haraway’s UN charter almost a century old, declared it bound by similar laws to earth, which made its seas international waters as far as fishing, mining and exploitation went.
Diplomatic failure bought initially peaceful protests and obstruction, a ban on foreign vessels using Harawayian ports and facilities and trade boycotts of EU goods (a largely symbolic gesture which never the less helped Haraway’s domestic industry to continue its growth). Clashes between corporate security teams on factory ships and around the ports they built grew increasingly violent, culminating in several deaths when a Harawayian fishing vessel was rammed and sunk by a much larger factory ship.
The shock and outrage at this event, combined with Haraway’s by then directly democratic government quickly spiralled the situation out of control and Haraway’s government demanded the immediate evacuation of all off world corporate personnel. Several corporations demurred, including those backed by criminal organisations interested in the more narcotic native Harawayian drugs. Within a few months full out war erupted between hired mercenaries and private military contractors (sometimes supported by EU military advisors) of the corporations and the Harawayian self defence force.
Though inexperienced, Harawayian troops, aircraft and warships faired well in the initial battles, succeeding in mostly driving the corporations from the planet. The war however became increasing violent as it went on, with Harawayian villages being razed by mercenary troops, and even the use of medium range ballistic missiles against some Harawayian cities.
Harawayian retaliation also grew increasingly brutal, culminating in the destruction of the corporate facility on Mandora Island with fuel air explosives in 2149 with a death toll of nearly ten thousand. While this took the fight out of the remaining corporations it also led to a diplomatic crisis with the EU, angered by the death of so many of it’s citizens.
With EU military intervention looming, Haraway’s defence force girded itself for what would very likely be its last stand at the begin of the 2150s. And then the breakdown came, cutting off Haraway from the universe and returning it to splendid isolation.
During the breakdown, Haraway continued its transhuman researches, creating the caste system which still exists today, and building up its domestic industry and space program. Unlike the first period of isolation, it was not believed that this one would last, and Haraway maintained a strong military to fend off further aggression.
Contact between Haraway and what would become ZOCU begun during the breakdown, mostly through Theta-drive equipped vessels. Despite cargo limitations, Haraway was able to trade information on advanced transgenic techniques and large quantities of highly portable drugs and medicines for technical help and information to continue its technological modernisation program. By the mid 2160s they even had several Theta drive equipped starships of their own, including the heavy cruiser Isis which served with ZOCU forces in the battle of Vrijheid.
Experience on Vrijheid demonstrated the utility of combat frames, and Haraway purchased the licence to produce the Peltast just before the Isis’s return home.
With new transhumanism at home and the beginnings of a new alliance abroad, Haraway was not unprepared when the breakdown ended in the late 2170s. While the culture shock was not as severe as it had been at the recontact, many on Haraway member the isolation of the breakdown with nostalgia. With FTL travel restored, Haraway would finally see it’s long delayed war with the EU come to pass. The war proved relatively successful, though its sending was less than satisfactory, with much of Haraway's space fleet in ruins, and the loss of much of it's battle line. Still, Haraway was able to achieve independence it wanted even if the treaty of Sirius restrictions remain in place.
Haraway's post war politics have been marked by rapid economic mobilization and continuing hate for the Core. Most Harawayians believe that it is only due to Harawayian and ZOCU strength that they have not been dominated and subject to radical social engineering by the core, specifically the EU, with many pointing to examples such as Adhara as proof of PACT and the EU's malign intentions towards social experimentation in the colonies. For this reason Haraway retains a strong commitment independence and sovereignty for its self and other powers in the wake of the war. Many Harawayians also believe that the war was only the first of many.
An emergent force in Harawayian politics post war is the Development Party, led by charismatic musician Emma Lan, who seek to curb Harawayian militarism and prevent another destructive space war. While not as strong as established political interests, the Peace Party has managed to make considerable gains in debates and getting its proposals implemented as policy. Despite these gains, most Harawayians still see the rest of the universe as a rather hostile, or at least untamed place and intend to meet it the same way they met the challenges of early Haraway, with skill, industry and lots and lots of augmentation.
