History
Concept: O'neill Cylinder array in a heavy elements nebula surrounding a failed star.
The expedition was funded by Tenser Industries and involved many of their scientists and engineers who were working on sensitive projects then facing litigation. Rather then bow to the pressure from the UN, Tenser loaded up a significant portion of its Sol based workforce and left with the blessings of the Posthumans.
The Neferti Nebula Cluster was their destination. A curious nebula made of failed starstuff, it was initially just a curiosity being studied by the colony ships while their limpdrives recharged. However, the discovery of abundant water-ice in the system's kupier-belt analogue, as well as a freefloating structure of unknown design convinced the leaders of the expedition to devote more time to study.
The longer the expedition stayed, the more they yearned to learn about the nebula, and the strange structures that were occasionally spotted within. During the early 2080s, one such structure was 'captured', and discovered to be a precursor automated drone, still operating after millions of years. The massive structure was some sort of helium harvester, moving from the rich He3 flows in the inner nebula, to a jump point on its outskirts. The gathered He3 was deposited in orbit of a Kupier object, where its orbit eventually decayed and it fell. The object was named 'Nocturne', for the perpetual night it experiences, and a small outpost was established.
With their stay at the nebula looking to be increasingly permanent, and contact with the main branch currently impossible, the regional heads of the expedition made the decision to canabalize their ships and whatever reasources they could find and construct a permanent presence. Initially constructing O'neill cylinders from Kupier-belt objects and harvested precursor drone-structures, the colony was soon thriving. As more colonists were woken and introduced to their new home, a sociopolitical schism began to spread across the colonists- between those who were assured a planet beneath their feet and not endless travel in space, and those who were content to live here, away from the prying eyes of the core.
In 2090, contact was reestablished with the core, and Tenser, eager to see what had become of their expedition, reaffirmed its control of the then-fledgeling colony. Asserting control was not a bloodless happenstance, as several independent interests had sprung up in the name of capitalism. Ruthelessly suppressed, Tenser began arming and equiping its own paramilitary ground force to replace the colony's own- believing that it is better to have a truly loyal military force, than to have the population trust you.
It was this changing of the guard that served as the initial spark of discord that would later result in the Testament Incident, and the formation of Pyramid.
When the Breakdown hit, Tenser had begun to see a decrease in new artifacts and material being passed back to their main offices from the Nefertan colony. Profits were down, and efficiency, the god of the corporate dynamic, was behind.
While several attempts were made to increase the previously high influx of resources, it was determined that aggressive harvesting by Tenser edict had 'tapped out' the Nebula of its precursor relics, and with no sign of local posthumanity, the decision was made to pack up and move on.
Naturally, the colonists, having invested significant time, effort, and other resources into their current home objected strenuously. But Tenser 'knew best', and deployed its paramilitary ground forces to quell the potential conflict before it could begin. However, they did not count on the objection of the local police forces, which were composed primarily of ex-military men and women who were left jobless when Tenser replaced the military with their own all those years ago. This sharp opposition of trained, efficient, and dedicated soldiers resulted in a brief 'brush war' that lasted for several weeks, before the regional director threatened to decompress Heliopolis, the main O'neill cylinder if the opposition did not give in to his demands and cease their resistance.
Obviously against UN regulation, his act of desperate terrorism would cause irreparable damage to Tenser's reputation- and the colonists knew it. It was a bluff- a stalling measure to keep them in line until Tenser could get its naval fleet to the Nefer system- with the hope that the captains of the colonial navy would not risk damage to the colony, and surrender their vessels and assets.
Fortuitously, the Breakdown struck before the Tenser fleet could arrive. As weeks- and then months of standoff passed, along with the discovery of their sudden isolation, the Governor folded to the pressure from the civilian authorities, and stood down.
