The Digital Web. A digital frontier. I tried to picture clusters of information as they moved through the network. What did they look like? Ships, motorcycles? Were the circuits like freeways? I kept dreaming of a world I thought I'd never see. And then, one day, I got in.

Backstory

"When you grow up in front of a screen, you start to realize there is a lot more possibility inside the Web than outside. Online, you can build what you want, fly where you want, live how you want. It was there I met Mel. She was good, really good - best I played against as a kid. We made an awesome team. My folks thought she was an imaginary friend - until she sent me my first VR rig.

Going on the web for the first time was a thrill. I started noticing elements of the game I hadn't seen before. It was like the virtual world was more real than anything outside. No one care that I was just a teenager - if you were good, you were good. I avoided being a jerk, so I was able to get into people did more than fly for games - they flew in areas of the virtual world that were unexplored. That was when I found my calling.

As I flew with Mel and the other explorers, I began to realize that that I could take things to the next level. I could build with a thought. I could see the code beneath the landscape. What stunned me is when I could see the same thing in the so-called real world. I had Awakened. Mel eventually introduced me to her "mom", who was a Virtual Adept. Mel was something called a familiar - an independent AI, native to the Web. Her "mom" was the patron of my group of explorers, and she taught me a lot.

Then the technocrats came. It was one hell of a furball, with virtual space nearly whiting out numerous times. Sadly, that was just a cover for an attack on the real-world based of the senior VA. The bastards carbombed her, taking out her entire house. The remaining explorers went their separate ways, while Mel and I went to a secret base she knew about where we could refuel. Some day, I'll show the technos how an ace deals with his enemies, but until then, there is a world to explore. Care to join me?"
