History

One of the most populous Expanse polities to have a nearly pure transgene population, SIYAN (the name is conventionally always written in upper case) is also the most populous and only major state in Erebus. Opened for colonization in the late 2100s, the Ereban settlers dominantly came from the Pacific Rim states. They typically were skilled professionals who had genetic enhancements or wished to get them for their children. As these tended to come from the well-to-do, educated upper and middle classes that could afford to relocate into the Expanse, this brain gain gave Erebus a significant edge and allowed for a rapid transition to a more mature economy. With this came a movement for autonomy and in 2142 the UN agreed to a timetable of phased self-governance.

The intervening decades were relatively quiet on Erebus and for the new SIYAN government, with the largest struggle coming from the sluggish UN bureaucracy. Hardliners in the UN ensured that there were member-state troops stationed on Erebus to ensure that the transgenes of SIYAN did not get too independent, particularly with the increasing tensions with the ZOCU organization. This finally changed in 2187 when the 1st Space War erupted over Haraways World. Within a week the SIYAN armed forces - significantly stronger than anticipated - seized control of the unprepared UN-operated military bases on Erebus and disarmed the troops there.

SIYAN entered the war as a ZOCU co-belligerent, though it never officially joined the organization like a number of other breakaway colonies did. It did coordinate military operations however and deployed some extremely powerful if numerically limited forces during key operations. When the war came to a close, SIYAN sought a seperate peace and agreed to reduce its He3 deliveries as reparations. In the susequent years it maintained independence despite several attempts by ZOCU to bring Erebus into its political orbit, instead maintaining close ties with Theia.
