Ancient History

Flessan was originally settled when drought and nomadic horse tribes from the east came and drove the peoples already there westwards towards the empires then northern border. Settling in the Shorn plain they made contact with the Dragarean Empire and were “conquered” over a period of 75 years. The Empire represented safety from the roaming bandits, orcs, and the surge of other tribes moving ever closer to their new homeland. This was to end when, the Imperial throne loosening ever more power, withdrew the garrisons closer and closer to home eventually leaving Flessan to her own devices. They soon realized that as several different tribes with separate lands they could be easy picked apart one by one. To this end the various tribes formed a confederation to better protect themselves and their lands now that the Imperial Guard was gone. This provided them with an ample number of warriors now using Imperial weapons and tactics. Unfortunately the Empire realized that as well and took steps to wean them done in an effort to still retain a measure of control. During her decline the Empire used the Flessans auxiliaries to blunt the attacks of other provinces in the area. This practice quickly turned the people against them as they bleed and died for an empire that no longer cared for them. The breaking point was a deadly famine where the imperial court ignored pleas for help as thousands starved to death. Up to then, they had been loyal even as other provinces closed themselves off to the Empire. Now the Empire had finally turned her back on them. If Dragarea would not help then they’d have to handle it themselves. Disillusioned and desperate they turned on their former masters and under their newly crowned King Malaric, began a series of raids that sacked or destroyed hundreds of imperial towns. With the last holdout on gone the violence quickly rippled outwards as the Western part of the Dragarean Empire fell to her former provinces.

Flessan actively fought against the new Eastern Empire, pledging to never call another foreign state her master again In the 388 years of the Eastern Empire they never once successfully invaded Flessan soil. With the fall of the Eastern Empire and the Warring states period occupying the remaining powers that be, Flessan had an era of relative peace for the first time in over 1,000 years. Retaining most of the architecture, technology, and culture of the Dragarean Empire they merged it with their own skills in metallurgy and expanded on it to improve the country and the lives of her people. Her over-all infrastructure was repaired and updated so new sewers helped keep the cities free of disease. This era of peace ended 200 years ago as the Dark Elves made a stab to claim part of the surface using monster allies. After several centuries of easily defeated periodic invasions the Dark Elves combined the various bands of trolls, orcs and Goblins among other creatures into a lethal army under their control. Caught off balance by the enemy her initial forces met defeat and retreated leaving the way to the Capital open as they regrouped. During this time Queen Arella rallied what support she could and held the city against the horde until her husband, King Eleric broke the siege by attacking the exposed flank. Her dark elves commanders slain in the surprise attack the hordes cohesion broke apart almost immediately as old blood feuds erupted in the ranks. Now divided among each other they were slaughtered and the strength of the Orc kind was crippled for decades as they bred again in their caves and swamps.

Necromantic War

Flessan had remarkably little to do with the following Necromantic Wars having it fill of death with the invasion and its own Battle of the West March. Only towards the end did her armies march out to crush the undead spilling over from other lands. In the remaining 200 years Flessan has continued being a strong, technically advanced nation as the ironic spiritual successor to Dragarea long after her passing.
