Western Gushan

Formed from the victories of the White Turban Rebellion that so influenced the Pugilist Risings, the Coven is an excess of every style of covenant, grotesque in government. In its College of Princes it holds to the absurd extreme of Blood Reign, hosting Gushan princes who have had no holdings for two-hundred years as equal members. Its College of Magi hold strictly to the laws of Yuhwa, defying the central Celestial Sejm as they wish. Its subject princes and alliances bind together a country which is not a country, with no stable capital, a greatcoat of nations diguised as empire. Its Eoraha, the witch-king, is a model of poorly conceived sacral kingship, powerful mostly in the length of his robes and ceremony. True, though, it must be conceded, that the Coven is a great power of the sea, and industry does emerge on the banks of the great river Iteru, and it does cultivate a mess of Lesser Covens, tied by their faith in Yuhwa. But still, God shall one day blind this eye, and fittingly end its despicable existence which threatens the stability of students of theopolitics everywhere, especially when we discuss 'floating chambers'.

Trusted Organs of Morality (2)

I drive away the Lie from this house, from this borough, from this town, from this land; from the very body of the man defiled by the dead, from the very body of the woman defiled by the dead; from the master of the house, from the lord of the borough, from the lord of the town, from the lord of the land; from the whole of the world of Righteousness.
- Fargard 10.5

Maximum Macheesmo (10)

Occult Nexus (2)

Between the trees, there is a bear ghost.
Bottom of the pond, there is a water ghost.
Beyond the sky, there is a phoenix.
Behind the traveler, there is a goblin.

What a shining bright full moon, EOLSSU!

Behold, Now the greatest tiger is coming down to this whispering mountain.

Let’s dance on this night until you lose your mind
Let’s dance right under the teeth of the Mountain God.
- Ahn Yeeun, “Changgwi”

Hang Together [Borders] (2)

"Divide and rule, a sound motto. Unite and lead, a better one." - Johann Wolfgang von Gothe

Star Patrol (1)

The Biggest Gang (1)

Two rules that can not be broken Johnathan: no blood on Continental grounds and every marker must be honored. Now while my judgement comes in the form of Excommunicado, the High Table demand a more severe outcome if their traditions are refused […] Exactly, Rules, without them we live with the animals.
- John Wick 2: Chapter 2, 2017

Category D Units (2)

The ship had been rebuilt and redesigned so often that there had grown up a popular notion in the Fleet that young constructors joining the Royal Corps were given Carousel to practise on, like a teething ring. […] Her radar was modified at annual intervals. A helicopter landing platform was built on the quarterdeck and removed before it had ever known the beat of wings. Mine-laying rails were laid out along the main deck but laying ports were never cut in the ship’s side. There were sudden changes, steps, drops, and inclines on every deck. Many pipes disappeared into bulkheads, never to reappear. Compartments existed all over the ship whose original purpose had long been forgotten and every passageway contained anonymous fuse boxes, plugs and brackets which baffled the ship’s company. The ship’s external appearance had changed so often that at last even ‘Jane’s Fighting Ships’ admitted defeat. Carousel was struck from the list of the other 8,ooo-ton cruisers of her class and given a special half-page of her own, her photograph being headed by the curt and aggrieved notice — ‘The silhouette of this ship is liable to radical change without warning.’
- Winton, John. We Saw The Sea (Artful Bodger Naval Adventures Book 2) (pp. 62-63). Sapere Books. Kindle Edition.

Mystic Haven (2)

We circled once, at screaming speed, well outside the null. I was astounded at what Darling had put together. About fifty windwhales, including some monsters over a thousand feet long. Mantas by the hundred. A vast wedge of walking trees. Battalions of human soldiers. Menhirs by the hundred, flickering around the walking trees, shielding them. Thousands of things that leaped and hopped and glided and flopped and flew. So gruesome and wondrous a sight.
-Glen Cook, “The White Rose”

Martial Society (3)

"O King of kings, I am ready to do thy commandments, for my mother brought me into the world that I might weary myself for thee, and unto thee pertaineth rest and joy, and unto me combat everlasting."
- Firdausi, “Shahnamah”

Flaws

Yearning Masses (-2)

No, the dead man had not been mentioned again; and anyway soldiers presumably become soldiers for exactly that, to die in defense of their King. But the image of that gutted corpse often recurred, as if asking to be given peace in the only possible way the Prince could give it: by justifying that last agony on grounds of general necessity. And then, around, would rise other even less attractive ghosts. Dying for somebody or for something, that was perfectly normal, of course; but the person dying should know, or at least feel sure, that someone knows for whom or for what he is dying; the disfigured face was asking just that; and that was where the haze began.
- Di Lampedusa, Giuseppe. The Leopard: A Novel (pp. 11-12). Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group. Kindle Edition.

Shake and Bake (-1)

Institutional Arrogance (-2)

“I have to confer with you!” Pause. “I’ve been abused,” he resumed, peering straight into the lawyer’s sparkling glasses, and noticed after a while that words were failing him. He should have brought the primer along. With that odious object in hand, he would have had a far easier time explaining things.
“What kind of abuse?” asked the lawyer.
“I never served with the cavalry.” That was how Captain Trotta felt he might best begin, although he himself realized he was not making himself clear. “And here these shameless writers write in the children’s books that I galloped up on a sorrel, they write, on a sweat-covered sorrel, to rescue the monarch, they write.”
The lawyer understood. He knew the piece himself from his sons’ books. “You’re taking it too seriously, captain,” he said. “Don’t forget, it’s for children.”
- Joseph Roth, The Radetzky March

Keystone Navy (-2)

“A navy is essentially and necessarily aristocratic. True as may be the political principles for which we are now contending they can never be practically applied or even admitted on board ship, out of port, or off soundings. This may seem a hardship, but it is nevertheless the simplest of truths. Whilst the ships sent forth by the Congress may and must fight for the principles of human rights and republican freedom, the ships themselves must be ruled and commanded at sea under a system of absolute despotism.”
- John Paul Jones, Letter to the Naval Committee of Congress (14 September 1775)

Factious [Borders] (-2)

It is this fact of a great continent which is so essential for our country. God's Kingdom is part of a continuum, the greatest shard of the ancient spire. Should it have been isolated it would not have formed at all. Every country on Camad shares things with the others, and the innumerable little nations of this place have been shaped by our connection. It also means, to our detriment, we must sometimes share this place with those we'd rather send very far away.
- Pontiff-Prelate Samangan, Marginalia on the pages of Study of the Spire’s Fragments

Fifty Shades of Possession (-2)

Coldest War [Borders] (-2)

“You’re a slave to history; even after Calamity, you fight against the only order that can guarantee the safety of your people. You, solely, are responsible for this. (...) And for what? To secede from the world?! What, you think you can fight this war again in fifty years time? Do you really think History will see it your way?”
- Crimson 1, ‘Kings’, Project Wingman (2020)

No WMD Please, we're Vampires (-1)

“[…] if anyone kills a human being, unless it is in punishment for murder or for spreading corruption on earth, it will be as though he killed of all human beings. And, if anyone saves a life, it will be as though he had saved the lives of all human beings. Our Messengers came to them with evidence of the truth. Yet, many of them continued to corrupt earth by their over indulgence.”
- The Qur’an 5:32 (Trans. Safi Kaskas & David Hungerford)

Autobahn (-1)

Your nation has heavily invested in transport infrastructure, giving your people and your economy especially easy and convenient movement across your lands. Unfortunately this well-maintained and exceptionally well designed road and rail network means that any would-be attacker can almost always find some rapid route in or across, even through nominally defensible terrain; in practice this means they will never really be 'bogged down' due to terrain. This disad can also be used to represent nations built on particularly flat and drivable lands where even the most mundane of all offroad vehicles - the Toyota Hillux - can roam to and fro at will.

The current dynasty of Maripgans were regional upstarts from the steppe and soon found themselves at odds with the hyangni-deqhans of Gyerim that had acknowledged their kwarrah. Among many of their disputes was the size of the Maripgan’s armed entourage, and in the fourth year of Kwangmin Isageum’s reign the Hwabaek Council restricted his guard to no more than 4,000 archers from families of good character. In response the royal family exploited the most technical of loopholes: expanding the Outer Palace domestic establishment with thousands of new Court Ladies and lower grade attendants to be admitted on tests of skill in horseback riding and martial arts rather than traditional assessments of literacy and domestic work; for their own protection of course. While the new squadrons of Outer Palace ladies were clearly a violation of the Hwabaek Council’s combined will, interfactional bickering diverted attention from the issue, so the amazon regiments remained and progressively institutionalized. In present times, they form part of the backbone of the Gyerimean standing army and contribute many regiments to the Regular and Republican Guard where they serve well, though the cream are often kept at home with the Maripgan.

In Simurghshahr, Stone Sword Sages were religious troupes of traveling shamanic performers who worked their miracles with the Dust Sword Dance, both ritual and martial art. Those who perfect the art are informally proclaimed Sword Saints. Sword Saint Barahan – then a minor Sage – was one of the first Apostles the Yuhwa would recruit after her flight from Arshan into Simurghshahr. Overwhelmed by visions of the Needle of Light, he sought her out and was baptized. Though denounced by his fellow Sword Sages, his unflagging profession of the Yuhwa even after her martyrdom and occultation would ensure that the Stone Sword Dance would become enshrined as one of the great Yuhwan disciplines. Over time the troupes of Dust Sword Dancers embraced the Yuhwa and new ones were founded, such that in the modern day the Sword Dancers are synonymous with the Yuhwa.

We knew that we should lose him. For one thing, we knew that he would be promoted. It was our great hope that some day he would command the company. Also we knew that he would be killed. He was so amazingly unself-conscious. For that reason we knew that he would be absolutely fearless. So it proved…

Bombs and air torpedoes were dropping round us all day. Of course the captain was there. It seemed as if he could not keep away. A torpedo fell into the trench, and buried some of our chaps. The fellows next to them ran to dig them out. Of course he was one of the first. Then came another torpedo in the same place. That was the end.

But he lives. Somehow he lives. And we who knew him do not forget. We feel his eyes on us. We still work for that wonderful smile of his. There are not many of the old lot left now; but I think that those who went West have seen him. When they got to the other side I think they were met. Someone said: "Well done, good and faithful servant." And as they knelt before that gracious pierced Figure, I reckon they saw nearby the captain's smile. Anyway, in that faith let me die, if death should come my way; and so, I think, shall I die content.

Armor

The cuirass has always given, and today more than ever it will give, confidence to the cavalryman. Courage, dash, and speed have a value beyond that of mere mass. I leave aside mathematical discussions which seem to me to have nothing in common with battle conditions.
-Ardant du Picq, Battle Studies III.4 “Cavalry Armor and Armament”

For many reasons the standard Hermetic doctrinal terminology and theory of “tanks” as a particular branch of service never really took hold on the world of Camad, despite the frequent military expeditions by Hermetic armies against the barbarians of this periphery world. Instead, tradition treats mechanized armor as an extension of the artillery, with “Tracks” organized as horse artillery gun batteries.

And as I look over the top of the turret and see twelve enemy tanks fifty yards away ... someone hands me a cheese sandwich."

The “horse artillery” of the modern Camadian age of war – incorporated in great numbers within the TO&E of Collegium Cavalry divisions – is represented by the various variants of K-64; a pleasing unity of protection, mobility, and firepower. One of the most advanced features was the Actively Etherized Dazzler Array panels along both flanks of the Battle Track, often referred to as “Gill Plates”, and the primary turret-mounted projector lens which seriously disrupt optics and energy aimed at the vehicle. To power the design’s high baseline power requirements without compromising profile requirements, the designers took the unusual choice of using a cosmoturbine meant for aerial use, whose overall compactness for provided . The vehicle’s silhouette also the autoloader for the main gun essentially surrounds the three man crew in unprotected exotic volatiles with a tendency to sympathetically detonate after a hull penetration or even a spalling event with such force that K-80 turrets separate from the hull at extreme velocity.

Artillery

Artillery in battle has its men grouped around the pieces, stationary assembly points, broadly distributed, each one having its commander and its cannoneers, who are always the same. Thus there is in effect a roll call each time artillery is put into battery. Artillery carries its men with it; they cannot be lost nor can they hide. If the officer is brave, his men rarely desert him. Certainly, in all armies, it is in the artillery that the soldier can best perform his duty.

The vanship is the ubiquitous reconnaissance and observation aircraft of Camad, outwardly resembling an open cockpit prop-engine biplane or kite-wing monoplane in almost every respect. As humble as it appears, those attempting to target these aircraft have often been startled by their bewildering agility and non-existent stall speed, as most vanships can tailsit or stand on their nose at zero velocity as though suspended by a thread. The rude appearance of their construction is further belied by the advanced etheric-optical sensors in the nose and the Active Etherized Spell Arrays – usually in sidelobes along the inside of their compact airframes – designed for Etheric Warfare.

A common tactic for Vanship crews is to cut their engines and glide in almost total silence on their wings at treetop height, with the AESA systems busily engaged in microjamming and optical camouflage pattern distortions on the skin of the airframe. In this mode such a small aircraft is almost impossible to detect, particularly at night. Some crews delight in using such an approach to set up strafing runs with the navigator or spell integration officer’s rear machine-gun to harass enemy positions from complete surprise.

The Endurance class of Fleet Carrier began as a joint project between the Republic of Covasna and the Yavanna Leagues, defraying the immense capital cost that was otherwise too large for the Leagues to stomach alone. As one of the earliest manifestations of the Scoala Tinieri, these ships defied the conventional wisdom of carriers designed to support nothing more than a handful of Vanships or Torpedo-Reconnaissance Fighters as part of the skirmish screen ahead of the Line of Battle. Since the program was out with great secrecy, these ships were sprung on a shocked Celestial Sejm ex post facto.

The Endurances were brought into the All Flags Fleet to fulfill part of the Yavanna’s quota obligations, but were accepted only with undisguised contempt for wasting resources which could have gone to Line of Battle ships. When they were finally retired they remained with the Yavannas where they continue to serve with some dignity as elder statesmen in the Scoala Tinieri’s war against the Black Shoe Admirals. Seven weeks later there occurred a terrible sacrifice when three armoured-cruisers, Aboukir, Hogue, and Cressy, were lost on picket-duty off the Dutch coast. Such ships had the armor to take up station alongside the line of battle in an artillery duel, while also having the relative speed to either retreat from overwhelming odds or pursue a fleeing foe. Reality was more unforgiving as none of the recent battles in which these ships fought adhered to fleet tactical problems based on the chivalric mode of Camadian warfare, and this was a particularly thorny problem when the economy of their deployment made them attractive as the means to show the Yuhwan flag abroad. The twenty-minute Cape Matapan encounter, a particularly humiliating fiasco where the North Occident Squadron was wrecked in a botched diplomatic encounter with [ ], raised serious questions about the type’s actual ability to escape a pursuing capital ship. At the Battle of Dekkan Reef the North Occident Squadron was maimed yet again by a series of Alfheim anti-ship missile strikes, blissfully unaware they were even under attack until flames from detonating magazines erupted out of the gun barrels of the flagship and popped the turret roofs like champagne corks, exposing the serious deficiencies in sensors, etheric warfare, and point defense systems – or rather, the total lack thereof.

The Yavuz Pasha class Armored Cruisers are some of the more elderly examples of their type produced by the Collegium’s shipwrights according to traditional technique. All four are also, appropriately enough, the only survivors of this unfortunate type still in service under the All Flags by CC5501. The Pashas as they are affectionately known have managed to retain their dignity and, against the warnings of some, they continue to maintain pride of place as the core of the North Occident Squadron.

The Camadian ‘consort’ to the battleline is the Pavisier, a quite literally iconic style of fighting ship in the 2-3,000 ton displacement range wrapped around the arcane machinery of a Rubaiyat Khayyam field generator and a massive slab the length of the ship mounted on one flank: the eponymous ‘Pavise’. Rather than armor plate, this distinctive feature is actually an active etherically phased spell projector made of many joined panels which not only extends a faintly glimmering field of force across several hundred meters of space but can precisely concentrate it differentially in actively moving patterns. Holding station two to even five cable lengths off from the line of battle, the Pavisiers can deflect almost all forms of incoming fire that might have otherwise struck their partner ship with the ephemeral flash of geometric symbols or even suspend projectiles mid-air to be detonated by quick-fire gun batteries and machine guns. At close ranges – not uncommon for Camadian gunline engagements – the AESA projector can even be used offensively to warp and twist enemy hulls directly. The ‘Pavise’ itself is decorated with elaborate mural artwork, usually of Yuhwan religious significance.

After the Battle of Dekkan Reef, the failure of the Pavisiers to protect the Armored Cruisers from anti-ship missiles with canned field-avoidance attack profiles was noted and various experiments with jamming modes on the AESA projector and specialized external carcinotron barrage jamming mounts are underway, though none have been mounted permanently.

Beloved as they are, Pavisiers are considered a hardship posting due to unpleasant proximity of cramped crew quarters to noisily coruscating fields of energy.

Penumbral Service

The furthest submarine was the longest and largest of all. She overlapped her neighbours at both ends. Her tall fin soared above the stubby towers of the rest. She was painted dead black except for the white identification numbers on her fin and she was plainly brand new. The Admiral looked at her like a father recognising his favourite daughter.

The Admiral allowed himself to gloat over her for a minute and then, as though struck by a painful memory, scowled and turned away from the window. […]

‘Sometimes,’ the Admiral began, sadly, ‘I really wonder why we bother. We’ve all fought for years to get the Navy a new submarine instead of a new block of offices. We’ve fought, and beaten, every government department. We’ve fought every branch of the Navy. We’ve fought everybody from the Ministry of Pensions to the Y.M.C.A. to get this damned submarine. At last we got her approved. We got her designed, we got her started and now, by God, we’ve even got her finished. In spite of sympathy strikes, wildcat strikes, token strikes and every other bloody kind of strike. At last we got HMS Seahorse, God bless her and all who sail in her. Admittedly she’s obsolete. She was obsolete before she was even designed. That’s not the point. The point is that we’ve survived the worst the trade unions can do, we’ve survived two changes of government, three changes of First Lord and four financial crises to get her.

And now that she’s finished her work-up and is ready to join the fleet, what happens? We find we can’t choose a captain for her. The whole thing is taken out of our hands. We get some passed-over bumpkin nobody’s ever heard of…’

Far aft in the after torpedo space, Leading Seaman Miles, the torpedo rating in charge of the compartment, was being asked the same question by another schoolboy.
‘What would you do,’ the questioner’s voice was charged with drama, ‘if the submarine began to hurtle towards the bottom of the sea completely out of control?’
‘Face aft and salute, lad,’ said Leading Seaman Miles easily.

“B-Class” Fast Attack Penumbrals

‘There,’ said The Bodger, ‘goes the future. Actually, it’s the present now. This mighty vessel of ours is the biggest, fastest and most dangerous submarine we’ve got but compared with that ugly-looking lump over there we’re about as lethal as a baby’s bottle!’ The Bodger put up his binoculars. ‘That monstrosity is the biggest technical break-through since … since the discovery of the wheel. She can stay at sea as long as Moby Dick, she’s faster than a destroyer and she’s got a weapon that can blast across the Arctic circle and blot out a whole city. They’ve pinched a bit of fire from the sun and put it inside that submarine.’

The idée fixe of the radical reformists of the Școala Tinerii as they fulminated outside the halls of power was the “Fast Attack Penumbral” - a term of the art circulated from foreign doctrinal publications - an airship designed to cruise continuously underumbra at high speed and armed with the firepower to menace even a Mare Dreadnought from ambush; a ship which could truly outrun whatever it could not fight. Several of these ships, individually an alarming fraction of a new Saoshyant Battleship’s cost, could fight a protracted guerre de course despite the best efforts of an opposing fleet to protect a wide merchant marine, putting a dagger against the neck of the Mare and its dependency on a vast overseas empire. So long as the ruling cosmofleet regime prioritized all its energy on pacing the number capital gunships against the Mare’s Line of Battle such a project remained the fantasy of the as yet powerless clique and a handful of earnest but hopelessly junior advocates in the Celestial Sejmics. It was not until the cosmofleet disasters of the Taloisan-Nox Wars which paralyzed the orthodoxy of admirals and politicians that the Școala Tinerii were able to seize power and implement their most fevered designs.

Fleet Air Arm

‘Whether you like the idea of flying or not,’ continued The Bodger, ‘there isn’t one of you here who won’t be directly concerned with the Fleet Air Arm some time during your service career. Some of you will actually be pilots or observers. Some of you will serve on air stations. Most of you will go to carriers when you go to sea. You will all be concerned in some way. Flying now is the main armament of the Navy. It’s here to stay in a big way and you’d better get used to it.’

The Bodger need not have used such emphasis. He was addressing members of a generation who had never known a world without aircraft, to whom the most refined techniques of aerial warfare, up to and including the nuclear bomb, were commonplace. They had been in their cradles when Kingsford-Smith flew the Pacific and Byrd flew over the South Pole, toddlers when Amy Johnson reached Australia, and they were starting kindergarten when the Luftwaffe were trying their wings over Spain. They had been the first generation in the history of the world to look out of a classroom window on a summer afternoon and see a fleet of heavy bombers in the sky. Their lessons were learnt to the running undertone, like distant gunfire, of the great deeds of Taranto, Ark Royal, the hunt for the Bismarck, the bursting of the dams, Midway and the Battle of the Coral Sea. They had collected pieces of shrapnel and the tailfins of incendiary bombs as assiduously as they had earlier collected seashells and pebbles and they had all wanted to be pilots when they grew up with as fierce a desire as they had previously wanted to be engine-drivers. The techniques of survival had become as familiar to them as the school timetable. They marched by classes down to the shelters, in dressing-gowns and carrying their cocoa-cups, as unconcernedly as though they were filing into morning prayers. They enjoyed air raids and a boy who was fortunate enough to have his home bombed became a school celebrity and was pointed out as such to visiting parents.

Although the Beattys had forgotten details, traces of their knowledge, like the last instinctive remnants of an ancient lore, still remained and taken as an average the Beattys knew more about aircraft than The Bodger — a small ship man on his own admission — knew himself.

The Licurici (Firefly), produced by Industria Aeronautica Grovaz, is a now obsolescent three-seater torpedo-reconnaissance aircraft widely known for its distinctive gull wings and the unique howl when it rolls over into a steep diving attack; thought to be some combination of airflow over its airframe and through its cosmoturbines in high G-force regimes. IAG initially prototyped the Licurici from other gull-wing torpedo-reconnaissance fighters Grovaz had produced for the Regular and Republican Guard, pushing the envelope of what could be achieved with raw thrust and the slicing edge of aerodynamics, but failed many of their bids due to the high cost of their relatively sophisticated airframe. The company, despite being a publicly controlled interest, was therefore surprised by serious interest from a joint Covasnan-Yavanna program for a carrier-based fighter for use in the then secret Endurance class carriers. A strike aircraft that could join combat air patrols between strike sorties or turn into enemy fighters after dropping their munitions fit neatly into the developing theories of the Scoala Tinerii, and Grovaz’s latest offering fit the bill precisely.

Licuricis became infamous in the Asterism War where mercenary pilots hailing from the Collegium swarmed Taloisan loyalists over the skies of Limgrave. While these freelancers used all manner of fighter-bombers, it was the Licurici whose eerie banshee wail on its attack run became symbolic of the war itself. Already considered obsolete in the course of rapid development of Collegium avionics by the time of the Asterist Heresy they were largely withdrawn from active service with Regular and Republican forces and the All Flags Fleet, returning primarily into the hands of national armies where many flight commanders did – and still do – rule over flying kingdoms of adventurers in all but name.

In actuality these pods are projectors for the Actively Etherized Dazzler Arrays

As the admiralty of the All Flags Fleet and Celestial Sejm reeled from the trauma of the cataclysmic Battle of Mooshima, an alliance between the reformist minded Școala Tinerii and the Fleet Air Arm was able to briefly seize power from the Black Shoe Admirals. High on their list of priorities was introducing a high speed air superiority fighter with a particular emphasis on advanced ethero-electronics to intercept threats to the fleet while they were still on approach to launch weapons or even before they had detected the fleet, a brutal object lesson taught to the All Flags Fleet by the Hermetic fighter-bombers of Alfheim. Industria Aeronautica Grovaz - often shortened to I.A.G. or simply Grovaz - submitted their prototypes for a large, powerful two-engine variable sweep wing airframe capable of supporting a considerable number of external hardpoints for weapons and podded equipment. A massive AESA system was installed in the nose to support AIM-174 Zharptytsia air to air missiles, demanding the full attention of a Spell Integration Operator in the tandem backseat behind the pilot even with considerable computer aid. The Fleet Air Arm was enchanted by this aggressively beautiful fighter which could nimbly dance in the one-circle and the rate-fight with native snubfighters half its size or unloaded gross weight while turning an Evil Eye on targets over the horizon; only many years later did they realize what a temperamental feline they had married.

AIM-174 Zharptytsia

[8 IP/10 TL3 External: Weapons] [Upkeep: 4 SU]
Designed in tandem with the Evil Eye AESA system of the Caracal naval fighters, the Zharptytsia is a derivative of the Poziom ship-launched air defense missiles originally created for the new Far Reach Protected Cruisers adapted for active-self guidance with only initial cuing from the Caracal’s avionics. Almost as long as some earlier generations of Collegium-made fighters in and of themselves, these missiles carry heavy warheads, an enormous fuel fraction for an air-launched air-to-air missile, and an unerring seeker head. The Caracal can carry a frightening number of these and pursue multiple simultaneous engagements.

The Super Drapel (Trans: Super Standard or Banner) was ordered by the Celestial Sejm as one of the key investments of the 22nd Supplementary Fleet Law, completely replacing the Drapel I through IV series of fighter-bombers that preceded it. Emboldened by the humiliation of the North Occident Squadron at the Battle of Dekkan Reef and the catastrophe of the Battle of Mooshima, reformists of the Școala Tinerii envisioned torpedo reconnaissance fighter-bomber squadrons taking pride of place as a new striking arm of the fleet rather than as scouts and support for the Line of Battle. To this end both a new antiship missile (what would become the Nalchi AShM) as well as an aircraft with a sophisticated suite of avionics would be required to perform the mission. However, these radicals were forced to scrounge for cost savings to save their projects from the budgetary knives of their enemies; they chose to modify the existing Drapel IV airframe rather than start with a clean sheet design. The necessary concessions meant that though the Super Drapel had more powerful engines than previous Drapel series fighters it was a substantially worse dogfighter and fitted only with its twin heavy repeater shock cannons for self-defense when loaded with ordinance. Fleet Air Arm pilots accuse the Școala Tinerii of having betrayed their political alliance, suspecting a compromise with the senior Admiralty that yoked Super Drapel squadrons to their anti-ship role and firmly under the Black Shoes.

Coastal Command Patrol Bombers

When at last the Air Show ended the admirals and captains of the greatest Grand Alliance in history had been given a thorough exposition of the trials and hardships attached to anti-submarine flying.

CincRock found his voice. ‘Did you find any submarines?’

Every flying eye turned towards a pale youth with a faint blond moustache sitting in the back row of the pilots. He was the only pilot who had not yet spoken. The others looked towards him as though to one who had searched for, and found, the Holy Grail. He was their champion, the gentle knight without a blemish. He had seen a submarine.

Auxiliaries

Task Force 112 was the most extraordinarily motley collection of shipping ever assembled in British maritime history. It was an international fleet, including Norwegian masters and Chinese deck-hands, Dutch mates and Lascar firemen, Captains RN and Papuan winchmen. It was a Commonwealth fleet, with officers and men from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India and Canada. There were warships flying the White Ensign, Royal Fleet Auxiliaries flying the Blue and merchantmen under charter flying the Red. There was a Panamanian collier, and a Dutch hospital ship, and a Danish tanker, and Norwegian and Belgian ammunition ships. Some ships were brand new, others were thirty years old. There were floating repair shops, floating docks, and, latterly, a floating brewery. There were accommodation ships, and netlayers, and salvage tugs and deperming ships, and water-distilling ships, and aircraft-ferry ships, and aircraft-maintenance ships, and armament, air naval and victualling store issuing ships. With personnel of different nationalities, different charter parties, articles of agreement,[268] racial customs, even different diets, the problems of administration were enormous. It was no wonder that the Americans with their modern homogeneously manned train of ships, each commissioned as a warship under naval discipline, looked upon the British fleet train with frank amazement.

The old style of Collegium-built fighter aircraft called the “Century Type”- best represented by the Drapel IV Torpedo-Reconnaissance Fighter and the NA-100 Super Shamshir - now obsoleted by the rapid development of avionics for first line aircraft. The Century Type tended to be based around shock cannon armament and short ranged air-to-air missiles for rapid air intercepts with some minor concession to ground attack with rockets & gravity bombs. While withdrawn from active service in the Regular and Republican forces they still make up the majority of tactical aircraft operated by the national armies of the Collegium, many of which engage in mercenary adventures across nearby world-realms; much to the chagrin of Alfheim during the Asterism Heresy.
