"If there were to remain in the life of the world but one day, God would prolong that day until He sends in it a man from my community and my household. His name will be the same as my name. He will fill the earth with equity and justice as it was filled with oppression and tyranny."

The Khedivate

The Georgian Empire was one of the oldest human powers in the underground world, claiming to be the direct continuation of a now mostly mythical polity on the surface of the same name. Once one of the most powerful states underground it was rocked by violent spasms of religious turmoil which developed into bitter civil war as a Severian-Hypogean cadet branch, the Eurydikid-Ayrarats, struggled with the nascent Athanasians. The ultimate result of stalemate was the division of Greater Georgia between the ancient capital of Zenoupolis and fertile Ayrarat, the lake country.

Presently Imperial Ayrarat has been much reduced from former splendour. Over the last century much of Greater Georgia has been lost to the secession of minor holds, barbarians irruptions, and the predations of Austrasia. The recent extinction of the Eurydikid-Ayrarat dynasty’s principal line balances the state on the knife’s edge of war. In absence of a ruler of the Dynasty the megas ethnárkhēs of the Empire assumed the Khedivate, a collective regency in the name of the as yet unrevealed mahdi soter to come.
