Surveying
The process of exploring the galaxy of Ruins begins with the Survey system.
There are no limits on the number of Surveys you can organize from one year to the next. However, any assets you have assigned to a Survey do not teleport: they will be occupied for at least [x] quarters + travel distance from the nearest friendly port.
There are three kinds of Surveys, which have different requirements:
- Grav-Surveys
- General Exploration
- Colony Surveys
All survey orders are to be registered in the Survey thread, where the GMs will process them over the course of a turn.

Colonization
In Ruins of Alien Suns, it is generally assumed that people are not in a hurry to abandon the creature comforts of home to endure hardship postings on distant stars. Furthermore, with communications limited by the speed of light between comm buoys stationed at Jump Points, only the Great Powers - by dint of their prestige and power - find themselves able to retain real sovereignty over colonies more than two jumps distant of the home system.

Initial Colonization
Once a Survey has been completed, a player may discover three different grades of potential sites, each with different benefits.
- L1 Colonies
- A Level 1 Site represents either a cheaply exploited resource or some unusual phenomena worth sustained scientific study: Extraction Operations and Research Outposts. Establishing an L1 Colony requires an initial investment of $200 to recruit the initial cadre of staff and lay down necessary infrastructure, and can begin operating in the budget year that they are discovered.
- Extraction Operations: Essentially airless oil rigs or other similarly lonely, joyless frontier businesses. Once established, Extraction Operations grant a Development slot that may only be used for Basic Resource Extraction.
- Research Outposts: Not dissimilar to Antarctic bases in the 21st Century. These grant 1 Prestige per turn and an extra Lab.
- L2 Colonies
- A Level 2 Sites indicates an asteroid, terrestrial body, or even a Lagrange point which is promising for future habitation like the Babylon 5 station. They are places of their own industry and economies that can be self sufficient and are thus profitable. A level 2 colony produces 10 +D20 prestige a year.
- L3 Colonies
- Level 3 Sites are rare and would be a hypothetical lost city of aliens that you could just move into or abandoned intact colony from somebody else. They would have a 20+D20 prestige roll.
