"I would have things as they were in all the days of my life, and in the days of my long-fathers before me: to be the Lord of this City in peace, and leave my chair to a son after me, who would be his own master and no wizard's pupil. But if doom denies this to me, then I will have naught: neither life diminished, nor love halved, nor honour abated."
- Return of the King
The Empire
The Georgian Empire is an ancient human realm located in the upper levels of the underground world, a prideful state that claims to be the direct and legitimate continuation of a now mostly mythical empire from the long lost surface world. Once a mighty realm that spanned many caverns and passages and underholds, it has in more recent times been reduced by war and misadventure mostly to its capital, the grand cavern city of Zenopolis, and its immediate environs. Though the Athanasian Dynasty has at least for now halted the empire's decline and undone some of the grievous damage of the previous period of near-anarchy, it seems unlikely at least for now that any return to the heady days of Georgia's former might is around the corner.
But while it is certainly much diminished from what it once was, Georgia is not yet a wholly spent force. Although the wider empire is mostly lost, the Athanasian Emperors have preserved and rebuilt the battered city of Zenopolis back to much of its former glory. Walking under the lights and through the streets of the grand capital it's possible to believe that beyond its walls the empire never fell into decline. And though the Old Orthodox Church has been weakened by the religious strife with the heretic sects in Ayrarat, at least in the capital it remains a solid pillar of the empire's strength and more importantly the Emperor's authority. At least for now another period of civil war is not an immediate concern and the empire can look to its external problems.
