General Rules
Leftover XP may be folded into XP in the same category to buy something (so leftover Primary Attribute XP may be folded into Secondary or Tertiary attributes, for example). If you still can't buy anything with the remainder fold it into 'general/freebie point' XP.
Attributes
Familiars start with 1 dot in every attribute save Appearance, which starts at 0.
Quick Reference: Attribute Costs
- 1 dot: 0 XP
- 2 dots: 0 + 4 = 4 XP
- 3 dots: 4 + 8 = 12 XP
- 4 dots: 12 + 12 = 24 XP
- 5 dots: 24 + 16 = 40 XP
Primary (5)
Most efficient distribution: 5/2/1
- Familiars have 44 XP in their Primary category
Least efficient distribution: 3/3/3 (assuming Social, 3 pts in App)
Secondary (3)
Most efficient distribution: 4/1/1
- Familiars have 24 XP in their Secondary category
Least efficient distribution: 2/2/1 (assuming Social, 1 pt in App)
Tertiary (1)
Most efficient distribution: 2/1/1
- Familiars have 4 XP in their Tertiary category
Least efficient distribution: 1/1/1 (assuming Social, 1 point in App)
Abilities
Reference
0: 0 XP
1: 3 XP
2: 5 XP (3 + 2)
3: 9 XP (5 + 4)
4: 15 XP (9 + 6)
5: 23 XP (15 + 8)
Costs
Each ability is worth 3 XP if used most efficiently. (at 3 or 1)
- Familiars start with 21/15/9 XP for the three Ability categories. (assuming 4 abilities at 3, 3 abilities at 1)
Willpower
Base 3
Essence
Base 1
- Cost for raising Essence is (current x 2) XP
Charms
Assuming a cost of 3 XP per point.
Freebie Points
Familiars have (rating x 10) freebie points, which they spend on attributes, abilities, willpower, and charms
- Most efficient distribution: Assuming 4 Abilities at 3, initial 8 freebie points are most efficiently spent on raising Abilities from 3->5 (2 freebie points become 14 XP)-> this becomes 56 free XP.
- Assuming a background rating of 1, the last 2 freebie points become 2 points of Charms, or 6 XP.
- Assuming a background rating of 2, the next 12 FP become 6 points of WP, or 33 XP
- Assuming a background rating of 3, the 22 FP become 7 points of WP for 14 FP (42 XP) and 8 points of Charms (24 XP)
- Assuming a background rating of 4, the 32 FP become 7 points of WP for 14 FP (42 XP) and 18 points of Charms (54 XP)
- Assuming a background rating of 5, the next 42 FP become 7 points of WP for 14 FP (42 XP) and 28 points of Charms (84 XP)
Freebie XP By Rating
- 1 dot: 56 + 6 = 62 XP
- 2 dots: 56 + 33 = 89 XP
- 3 dots: 56 + 42 + 24 = 122 XP
- 4 dots: 56 + 42 + 54 = 152 XP
- 5 dots: 56 + 42 + 84 = 182 XP
Familiar XP: Now With Scaling Essence Costs Factored In
Familiars have (rating x 10) freebie points, which they spend on attributes, abilities, willpower, and charms.
For the purposes of this calculation we'll assume nobody will want more than 10 Essence. For reasons.
- Most efficient distribution: Assuming 4 Abilities at 3, 9 of the initial 10 freebie points are most efficiently spent on raising Essence from 1->10 (90 XP).
- Assuming a background rating of 1 (10 fp), the last freebie point becomes 1 point of Charms, or 3 XP.
- Assuming a background rating of 2 (20 fp), you start with Essence 10 (90 XP) for 9 FP. The next 8 FP raise 4 abilities from 3->5 (56 XP). The remaining 3 FP become 3 points of Charms, or 9 XP.
- Assuming a background rating of 3 (30 fp), you get Ess 10 with the first 9 FP (90 XP). The next 8 FP raise 4 abilities from 3->5 (56 XP). The remaining 13 FP becomes 13 points of Charms, for 39 XP.
- Assuming a background rating of 4 (40 fp), you get Ess 10 with the first 9 FP (90 XP). The next 8 FP raise 4 abilities from 3->5 (56 XP). The remaining 23 FP becomes 7 points of willpower, or 42 XP, and 9 points of Charms, for 27 XP.
- Assuming a background rating of 5 (50 fp), you get Ess 10 with the first 9 FP (90 XP). The next 8 FP raise 4 abilities from 3->5 (56 XP). The remaining 33 FP becomes 7 points of willpower, or 42 XP, and 19 points of Charms, for 57 XP.
Freebie XP By Rating
- 1 dot: 90 + 3 = 93 XP
- 2 dots: 90 + 56 + 9 = 155 XP
- 3 dots: 90 + 56 + 39 = 185 XP
- 4 dots: 90 + 56 + 42 + 27 = 215 XP
- 5 dots: 56 + 42 + 84 = 245 XP
Recommendations
Given the incredibly high amount of Stuff Familiars can get now (which makes up for the unfortunate fact that Familiar charms are absolute shit in terms of cost-benefit), I recommend that Spheres, Arete, and mage-only backgrounds (Talisman, Blessing, Enhancement, etc) are double-costed for Familiars.
