How to Approve New Users on Sphere
Only bureaucrats on Sphere Wiki can approve users. As of this writing, all administrators on the wiki are also bureaucrats. If you need someone to approve your account, check the User List to find out who to talk to on the forums, IRC, etc.
First, some background: Mediawiki, the software that Sphere Wiki runs on, assigns all accounts to groups, which give their members permission to do things, such as editing pages. On Sphere Wiki, the permissions for the default group have been made more restrictive, and a special group, approved, has been made with (more or less) the usual default user permissions. To approve an account, you must add that user to the "approved" group.
Step 1
Go to special pages.
Step 2
Click on User Rights Management
Step 3
Enter the username you want to approve. Wiki usernames are Case Sensitive.
Step 4
Check the box next to "approved" -- IMPORTANT: Leave the box next to "Bureaucrat" unchecked. It is trivial for someone with Bureaucrat permissions to completely take over the wiki, which would require manually editing the database to fix. Press "Save User Groups" when done.
Step 5
The page will reload, showing that the user is now in the approved group.
