History
Canaan is a fractious princedom in former territory belonging to the Tarstein Empire but forcibly partitioned by the treaties that followed the end of the General War. The House of Golyat began as a house of trade within the Belkar Empire and held a large fleet in its name, but ultimately came to oppose the dictator Dresslok during his reign, fighting alongside other Belkar holdings that would have sought to place a proper imperial successor on the throne. They threw their lot in behind Tarstein for shared values, supporting them with the might of their similarly powerful fleet in exchange for war concessions and guarantees upon its tradeships.
The war did not go to plan, however and Canaan was forced to go its seperate way with a loss to national prestige and no proper imperial succession in place. With its trade charters now obsolete, Canaanite holdings began to hemorrhage vast amounts of money and the country's economy nearly collapsed. Industry was forcibly nationalized and many companies consolidated under the Golyat prince and his extended family, undoing decades of economic progress and empowering a simmering communist rebellion that considers the current state of the common people no better than serfdom.
As the war seems to approach on the horizon, Canaan prepares itself to combat these rising threats- both internal and external.
Culture
Canaan is a traditional, mystical culture based on ancestor worship and animistic reverence of particular spirits- of the moons, the sky and the temperamental spirits of ships themselves, which can only be placated if the ship itself is held in a shape that can be understood by humans. For this reason many of their shapes prominently feature animal shapes and figureheads, as the psychology of these creatures is well known. Ships with the shapes of men are rare and often forbidden if they resemble an ancestor, as it might accidentally trap the soul of a deceased, while ships that resemble women are rarer as Canaan's patriarchal culture does not trust women to readily accept the dangers of warfare.
Despite an aggressive, boastful culture and strong military tradition, the Canaanites place extreme pride on their hospitality culture, guaranteeing the safety and comfort of any people who they invite into their homes. Even impolite guests are not harmed unless they commit the worst crimes, instead gently shown they are not welcome by feeding them less and treating them with impassive silence. Men who do not obey these laws, even for the sake of securing military advantages are seen as scum and cannot retain the loyalty of their peers for long.
