History of the Cook Islands
Origins
The Cook Habitats were first founded in September 9th, 2127 by the UN Colony Ship Cassini. The system until then had been designated as XS-49; it's large gas giants and asteroid fields making it earmarked for an exploratory refueling outpost by the UN Exploration Vessel Magellan some 3 years earlier. No suitable planets for colonization meant the formation of a series of space habitats. The first was designated the Cook Habitat in honor of the great explorer, James Cook. The system consequently inherited the plural version of name.
Early History
June 14th, 2124: UN Exploration Vessel Magellan discovers a system along the rim with a red dwarf star, a single gas giant and the remains of three planets in the form of several asteroid belts. It is given the designation XS-49 and earmarked for further exploration later.
January 5th, 2126: UN Survey Vessel Chandrashekar surveys the system and finds it rich in many valuable resources. It is also surprisingly clear of feral drone infestation. It is earmarked for a dual-purpose outpost, both mining resources and providing a jump-off point for further exploration into the rim.
September 9th, 2127: UN colony ship Cassini is dispatched to settle the system.
December 3rd, 2127: Cassini arrives and begins initial operations.
December 3rd, 2132: After a decade of mining, refining and construction construction the first habitat is finally completed. It is named The Cook Habitat in honor of the explorer, James Cook. The system gains the same name and now holds 5,000 inhabitants. The HEC begins regular shipments of He3 to the system till its infrastructure comes online.
February 5th 2139: Mining and refinery infrastructure goes online, but the refueling infrastructure is still under construction. Due to an increasing feral drone presence in the surrounding systems however a sudden requirement for a defensive fleet comes to light.
February 23rd 2139: Refueling infrastructure goes online and the colony becomes a fully-fledged outpost to serve further exploration into the rim. At the same time many of the initial fabbers are connected and turned into a make-shift shipyard.
April 1st 2139: First merchant marine ship completes production/modification - the Jutland. Essentially a modified mining barge with several of its mining lasers swapped out for more powerful ones, it was a simple low-tech but modular design. Regular ship production begins on a three-month cycle.
June 4th 2139: First combat occurs in the system as feral drones attack. They are repulsed successfully, but the Jutland takes heavy damage.
June 6th 2139: Conversion of second mining barge Kursk is completed just in time to repel a second drone attack. Resources and raw materials are diverted from the outbound shipments into local factory production. Distress signal is sent to the UN to send ships to aid in defense of the outpost.
January 1st 2140: By now the outposts has expanded to 8,000 inhabitants - mostly from immigration and gravitation from other failed mining outposts in the rim region. Feral drones attack continue, but the UN fleet is delayed in its arrival. Two tugs have been converted - the Lafayette and Thunder. Further production is shut due to a lack of trained personnel to crew the ships. It is estimated the colony will only last two more months before evacuation is needed.
February 4th 2140: The UN fleet finally arrives, consisting of the Cruiser Malta and several destroyers.
February 21st 2140: The Malta successfully repulses the feral drone incursion in the system and moves on to the surrounding systems to clear out infestations there and generally conduct operations within the region, using the habitats as a base. Production resumes as normal; however immigration into the outpost continues as more and more rim expeditions are facing difficulties. Shipments to the core resumes as normal.
January 1st 2141: The original mission leader, Marcus Strongberg perishes when his yacht experiences an engine failure and collides with an asteroid during the new year's eve celebrations. He is succeeded by his 2IC, John Freeman.
March 1st 2141: Population has increased to 12,000 and a new problem has arisen: overcrowding. Freeman orders the expansion of the asteroid mining installations into full-blown habitats. By now it the Cook Habitat has become an immensely successful endeavor and has become a popular refueling outpost for not just core ships but other rim worlds as well.
January 5th 2145: Unexpected immigration has created an overpopulation crisis. As such, resource shipments have been diverted more than a few times to muddle through and build more asteroid habitats. The outpost houses over 90,000 inhabitants as of Jan 1st and due to this the UN officially declares it a full-blown colony and gives authorization for limited self-governance. John Freeman remains in charge, but takes the title of Administrator.
February 4th 2150: After 10 years of exemplary service in the rim, the Malta is recalled back to the core for retirement. Much of its crew opt for retirement within the Cook habitats or take up duties as commanders of the new ships being produced.
January 1st 2151: The colony grows steadily over the next half-decade as things remain generally quiet. By 2150 its population is now well over 150,000, spread out across dozens of asteroid habitats while it's fleet - while still consisting of merchant marine ships - has expanded significantly.
The Breakdown
August 5th 2151: The first ominous signs loom over the horizon in the form of a recession. Exploration has dried up due to problems in the core and sol with rogue elements and groups and along with it vital supplies. Faced with fewer supply drops in the future, Freeman takes the prerogative and starts rationing vital goods in order to improve his stockpiles.
December 19th 2151: December 19th sees the second sign come in the form of the first feral drone attack in over 15 years. The surprise and ferocity of the attack leaves an asteroid colony and its ten thousand inhabitants dead while wrecking a full third of the fleet. An emergency aid request is sent to the UN. However, due to the remoteness of the colony any aid will still take weeks to reach despite better FTL tech.
December 24th 2151: The next feral drone attack begins. Despite being more prepared this time, the cruiser Jutland and its crew of 400 are lost. Their efforts however, saved the orbital shipyards and the lives of 40,000 inhabitants.
January 1st 2152: Freeman calls for martial law, stopping all shipping of raw materials to the UN until the situation is resolved. No response has been received from the UN yet on when military aid will be available. Rapid militarization begins of all assets as the shipyards are fired up yet again.
January 5th 2152: All contact is lost with the surrounding rim systems. FTL communications has been knocked out and it appears the colony is all on its own.
January 12th 2152: An attempt to send a ship out to the core via FTL fails when its delta-dust drives do not work. It is not sure whether this incident is isolated or common throughout the rim, but the colony is now isolated and very much on its own. The breakdown has begun. All foreign ships are drafted into the Cook Habitat military until the breakdown ends. The colony begins to steel itself for the next Feral drone incursion.
May 31st 2156: Administrator John Freeman perishes on board the Jutland II as the first outer asteroid colony - and its 5,000 inhabitants - are lost to a massive feral drone wave. Devon Pax takes over as head of the colony and forges a daring plan to destroy the feral drone hive once and for all.
June 5th 2156: The Jutland III takes off with Devon Pax onboard on an insane and suicidal mission to take out the feral drone hive using a destroyed habitat's fusion reactor and one of the last two working FTL drives. The Jutland III makes last contact at 4PM local time.
June 6th 2156: A large explosion is detected at the suspected location of the drone hive. The Jutland III's mission appears successful as feral drone attacks waiver.
July 9th 2156: Last recorded feral drone attack. The system is officially declared clear of all feral drones. 65,000 inhabitants remains surviving. Attention is finally given to the issue of the breakdown and how to go around it. Framework for the Jutland IV is laid down.
August 1st 2156: Delta Dust drives are partially repaired and first contact is made with outside forces in well over 4 years - in this case in the form of refugees. The Breakdown is in full force, with many colonies nearby suffering greatly due to it. The first rescue fleet is hastily scrambled and sent to the nearby Athena colony.
Ocotober 21st 2156: Fleet returns with approximately 50,000 refugees. More distress signals come in from other, larger colonies and in an
