Background

By the middle of the 21st century it was very much apparent that any attempts to guess the direction of Earth's development would be useless. The rapid rise of posthumanity and the growing prevalence of increasingly extreme transgenic treatments were viewed with considerable alarm by many more conservative elements of the planet's population. With the sudden availability of first generation faster than light engines, it became possible to leave the turbulent homeworld behind entirely. The several thousand North American colonists who headed out for the frontier aboard the Speedwell in 2064 were amongst those who elected to leave.

The Speedwell colonists had every hope that they would be able to build a better future free from Earth's turmoil at their destination. They were sorely disappointed in every respect. Initial reports of their destination had been alarmingly mistaken in their overoptimism. Mesa Verde was no lush paradise, it was little more than a dusty and unpleasant rock that would take many generations to fully tame. Internal battle lines were quickly drawn as various factions within the newly founded colony's population, each group blaming the others for their predicament. After several decades of tension it seemed as if the Mesa Verde Colony would destroy itself as various groups began to openly take up arms. Only further disaster would bring the population back together.

In 2114, the Colony came under attack from the outside. The vanguard detachment of the Main Street Space Pirates, pillaging their way further into the frontier with weapons gained from systems closer to those of the Earth superpowers, made Mesa Verde their next target. The brutal war between the pirates and Mesa Verde would last nearly two decades, and only the fact that the Verdeans had been arming themselves before the attacks saved them from complete destruction. At last and only with considerable sacrifices the defenders proved victorious.

The destruction of the pirate invaders found Mesa Verde a changed world. The squabbling factions and rival settlements of the early days were gone, replaced by the rigid authority of the Planetary Defense Force. The generals have imposed order and proven reliable friends to the other growing power on the planet, the massive industrial conglomerates whose factories continue to roll out new armaments along with the machinery of terraforming. Civil liberties are practically unheard of and outsiders are looked at with suspicion or worse. Given how dangerous the Rim has become it may even be suspicion that is deserved.
