Background
Venture was founded by a late longshot, launched in 2081 by a group of venture capitalists who came to the conclusion that all the longshots heading out would be ripe markets. Laoding their ship, the Venture Star up with as many fabricators as they could buy or cajole from increasingly-disinterested posthumans, they set off to found their capitalist utopia.
The world they arrived at, hundreds of lightyears from Earth in the vague direction of Canis Major, was a semi-bioformed world. With a thin and predominantly Nitrogen/CO2 atmosphere it was nonetheless a living world, with exotic lifeforms living in the dusty sand seas and rusty uplands. It also showed recent signs of Posthuman visitation, with a surface to orbit beanstalk just completing itself; the crowning glory of what they'd been able to convince the posthumans to build for them as part of the longshot.
Unfortunately they had no banked on just how big the Rim was, or how slow FTL was at the time, or how difficult it was to identify functional routes. Their efforts to find other colonies with the pair of FTL scoutships they had were stymied by these issues and more and disgruntled the men and women of Venture settled down to build a new home for themselves, dreams dampened but not extinguished.
Eventually however routes were chargeted and Venture was finally able to seize its destiny as a corporate hub. Today both Downside and Upside are bustling metropoli and Venture is one of the few major shipyards in the Rim. Rumors even speak that they have been in contact with people from Old Earth . . .
